‘tis the month to learn about Microsoft Online Services – for business

Microsoft is hosting a number of WebCasts in September that talk directly to their plans for supporting your business online.

So, without further ado…here’s the semi-official R2 announcement

The sporadic communications through blogs and such over the past week or so about ConfigMgr 2007 R2 being RTM’d, I believe, has forced Microsoft to announce R2 publicly a little earlier than they wanted to.  Originally meant for Wednesday (tomorrow), the announcements from Microsoft are now starting to roll in.

The System Center Configuration Manager team would like to announce that the following has been Released To Manufacturing (RTM).

Download an evaluation version of ConfigMgr07 R2 from Microsoft Download Center.

Regards,
The Configuration Manager Customer Team

And…here’s the blog announcement we’ve been waiting for…

    System Center Configuration Manager
Desired Configuration Management - Trigger Evaluation Remotely
    by Sherry Kissinger - 9/3/2008
Either I haven't seen it posted elsewhere, or can't find it in the SDK, but I had a need to trigger DCM evaluations on clients. Here's the code I ended up with.

    App-V (formerly SoftGrid)
Time to get generous with ConfigMgr R2 client cache sizes
    by Troy Wilch - 9/3/2008
One of the nice things about being a consultant is gaining collective knowledge in how organizations run and operate their SMS/ConfigMgr environments. One of the things I run across from time and time again is, folks are stingy when it comes to client cache sizes.

    Scripting
VBS Script Find Clients Not Reporting A Serial Number To Excel
    by Don Hite - 9/3/2008
This VBS script will take a site server name and site code via input dialog boxes and will send the machine names to Excel that do not have a serial number present in the SMS database.

    HP Mobile Messenger
    by John Gormly - 9/3/2008
Call me fickle…but…the alerts going off so low you can barely here it unless you’re actually carrying the device, and the battery life…(it has a spec’d battery of 1940mAh in it)…is really grating on my nerves.

Building S+S applications with cloud services

This week Eugenio Pace, Microsoft Platform Architect and Software+Services guru joins me to talk about building S+S applications using cloud data services. Eugenio is one of Microsoft’s best experts at architecting S+S applications. He spends his days researching, architecting, designing, building software, speaking, and writing about Software+Services apps. In the podcast, Eugenio and I explore why S+S apps are different than traditional web apps, and how software designers should approach SQL Server Data Services using cloud data services. Microsoft doesn’t offer a cloud data service offering yet, but SQL DS clearly is the vehicle for connect S+S apps into Microsoft’s forthcoming cloud services. Eugenio knows his stuff and whether you’re architecting S+S applications or someone who makes decisions about IT technology and spending, you’ll get a ton of good information from the discussion with Eugenio. TechNet Webcast Audio: Simplify Branch IT with Citrix Technology (Level 200)

Growing business requirements at branch offices are resulting in increased infrastructure complexity. As organizations grow, so do the capabilities required by users and demanded by customers at branch sites. Because of this complexity, branch IT management is more costly, data stored and transmitted to the branch is more vulnerable, and it becomes more difficult to provision new branch servers and deploy capabilities at existing sites. To address this challenge, many organizations have chosen to centralize branch IT, often at the expense of important services at the branch, including file/print, identity, DHCP, and DNS, resulting in new challenges at the branch site. In this webcast, we unveil a new appliance-based solution from Citrix that delivers critical Windows services in the branch, while providing wide area network (WAN) optimization technology that empowers organizations to manage a more simple branch IT environment.
