SMS FAQ: Excluding the MS Directory from Antivirus Program Scans

Problem:
I've heard on the grapevine that it's a good idea to exclude any SMS Clients "MS" directory from being scanned/monitored by anti-virus programs. Is this correct?

Answer:
Yes this is correct. As the contents of the "Windows\MS" directory on Windows 9.x clients and "WINNT\MS" directory on Windows NT/2000 is frequently updated (for example SMS updating the log files), if you have your anti-virus program set to scan this directory and it's contents the machine can almost grind to a halt.

For Norton Anti-virus select "Tools | Options | Exclusions" and add "WINNT\MS" for Windows NT/2000 clients and "Windows\MS" for Windows 9x.

If you are really concerned about the threat of viruses you could set your anti-virus program up to do a separate scan of just the excluded directories.
