SMS FAQ: Discrepancies between Web Reports and the SMS Console

Problem:
I am taking a look at the SMS Web Reports, and I am seeing discrepancies between what the console is reporting and what the web reports produce. For example, doing a show count on collections produce a different number than reported in web reports:

Collection/Type Console Web Report
Windows 95 systems 39 37
NT 4.0 systems 864 829
NT 4.0 Workstation 818 829
NT Server 48 26
All systems 1217 909

Of course, people would love to use the Web Reporting for its ease of use, but the inaccuracies in the numbers has been some cause for concern for management.

We are on SMS 2.0 SP2 (no hotfixes) on NT4 SP6a with SQL 7.0. We are planning to go with SP4 when that's made available. Any suggestions on how to fix or explain would be appreciated.

Go into your ‘All Systems’ Collection. Sort on ‘Name’, Ascending and look to see if you have a bunch of non-system records in there, stuff like IP addresses, router names, and all that sort of junk. This is inserted via Network Discovery. It can skew your "real" counts substantially. Web Reports is pretty accurate for actual systems.

Web Reports doesn't give you a TOTAL COUNT like the SMS console does. Instead, it reports the assigned/installed/reporting. Your numbers skew significantly using the ‘All Systems’ Collection. Try creating the same Collection and set the criteria for SMS clients then you should get pretty close.
