Initiate Advanced Client Actions Remotely such as hardware, software, policies, advertisements, etc.

Bruce Jones at the MMS 2004 asked the audience for a tool that would allow an administrator to inititate HW Inventory from the SMS console or remotely. So, here's my take on it. It will do all the other client actions as well such as:

Re-Assign the Site Code
Restart the SMS Agent Host service
Regenerate the SMS Client GUID
Re-Run Advertisements without modifying the advertisement
Discovery
Software Inventory - Delta and Full
Hardware Inventory - Delta and Full
File Collection
Software Metering Usage
Refresh Machine Policies
Evaluate Policies
Update Windows Installer Sources
Change Port Number
Change Cache Size

You can run this per computer resource, or to all members of a collection.

Includes a standalone GUI interface to perform the actions outside of the SMS administrator console. Useful for changing the site code on clients that are not in the console or never had a site code set to AUTO or don't have the correct port configured.

Some actions require access to the admin$ share of the remote computer such as changing the cache size, as there is no WMI method for this. Also, this will only work on XP and greater OSes as the Win32_PingResult WMI instance is used.

**Thanks to Jeff Turner for discovering an issue with access denied errors if "Authenticated Users" does not have permission to read the "SMS Agent Host" service. So if you get access denied errors, be sure to cgeck permissions on that service.

This will install 3 VBScript files under the Windows directory; changecache.vbs, smsextend.vbs, and smssend.vbs You can use them as examples as well.
