The Ipaq and the Parrot

Recovering your Ipaq from a failed ROM upgrade.

Tested on ipaq 3600’s

Upgrading the ROM on your ipaq can be fun, it can also lead to disaster.
Worst case scenario, you have a communication error during the upgrade and the ipaq is left without a bootable ROM.

If this happens when using a genuine Compaq(HP) ROM either downloaded or from CD then Compaq should offer to fix it. If however you have been ‘medalling’ then it may be a chargeable fix.
Either way you will be without your ipaq for a few days as it travels off to your nearest service centre. If you fancy trying to fix it yourself, read on.

The following procedure provides a solution, and won’t leave you any worse off.
(NB. This procedure can also be achieved with a serial cable and HyperTerminal)

If you don’t own a CF expansion pack, borrow one from a friend. You’ll also need a CF card big enough for the ROM image. Get you ‘friend’ to reset his/her ipaq while attached to the cradle by pressing, the reset and action button (speaker) at the same time.
You should see a parrot, not speaking and not moving, but a parrot none the less.
This is some sort of boot screen allowing basic interactive commands.
Typing “?” will show you all the commands available.

In this example the working ipaq would want to copy its working Rom image to the attached CF card, so you would use the command “r2c”

Then attach the CF pack to the ‘dead’ ipaq and reset + the action button, stare at the parrot for a moment, nice isn’t it.

Now use the command “c2r” to copy the ‘good’ Rom back to the ipaq.
