While working on some other issues (isn' t that always the way?) I' ve found a number of advanced clients that are missing most of their logs.

I see RemCtrl.log and setuppolicyevaluator.log timestamped at the time the client is installed. Since then the only logs updated are ScanWrapper.log and Patchinstall.log because of Software Updates.

There are no other log files in the Logs folder. The strange thing is that the clients seem to be working fine, inventory, software distribution, etc, all seem to be working.

Any ideas? It' s pretty difficult to troubleshoot any other client issues if there are no logs to look at...

is it that the logs are missing? or just not updating?

That is bizarre..id wipe the client and start over.

I also have a number of clients with this problem. I was hoping an upgrade to SP2 would fix this problem but as it does an upgrade rather than a reinstall I now have lots of SP2 clients with missing logs. However, they do all seem to work fine, regardless, but it can be a pain when trying to troubleshoot any apps that haven't arrived or have failed.

I have a few apps out there that call an SMS reboot so it can be a pain to reinstall the client as it reboots the PCs when it reinstalls and reruns those specific advertisments. I think I'll have to change the progs to no reboot temporarily while I spend a some time reinstalling all the ones that are missing logs.

Does anyone know of a quick way to query these problem clients that are missing the logs without modifying our def_mof?

Thanks in advance,

Paul

How were these clients installed?

The site was put in with SP1 and they were installed calling capinst.exe from the logon script. It is affecting about 20% of our clients.

What does your logging keys say on the clients in question?  These keys can be found in HKLM=>Software=>Microsoft=>CCM=>Logging=>@global.  The LogEnabled key should be set to a 1.

Thanks for the tip. I have found an anomally.

In the registry on the clients I reinstalled using ccmsetup which have all logs in tact logging is set to 1 for logging enabled, log level and LogMaxHistory

But for the client pushed ones it is set to LogEnabled=0, LogLevel=2 and MaxLogHistory=1

In my Client Push Installtion Properties I have it set on the General tab everything ticked and set to platform dependant. In accounts I have a vaild account set and in Advanced Client I have it set to "SMSSITECODE=AUTO SMSCACHESIZE=2048

I don't see any extra settings for logging options so I'm stumped.

Thanks

paul

Try adding this to the Client Push Installation properties: CCMENABLELOGGING=TRUE.  Also, since you mention that the log level is set to 2, you may want to set it to 1.  You can try adding this as well: CCMLOGLEVEL=1

I did some more tests and removed a client and initiated an install from the console again and the client went one fine with the correct log settings. I think my problem may have been caused when I overloaded the network and server by right clicking all systems and forced an install on all clients in one single go.

The problem I have is that all clients installed from the SMSclient share on the primary site server rather than their local site (see my other thread). I'm wondering if this caused the problem in some way. I have created a package to fix the logging settings on existing problem clients and, having tested this on a few, the logs now appear as they should. I will do a little more investigation and then send out this package to all clients.
