Hi expert,

I found some of my upgraded SMS client (2.0 -> 2003) are not shown in the SMS console/collection/all system.  I checked that the Advanced Client is installed successfully in the PC, just their name is not shown in the SMS console.
I tried to find the DDR file from the PC but failed..... ( in 2.0, I will manually copy the .DDR file to the SMS server to resolve this problem).
How can I make these succussfully installed client hostname to appear in the SMS console again ?  By the way, the Advance client installation folder is now C:\windows\SYSTEM32\CCM ?
Thanks

SPC

Hi Spencer,

Yep, the advanced client is in the system32\ccm folder unless you force install it elsewhere.  I suspect that the machines not showing have installed the client, but can't get a site assignment.  Were their boundaries entered?  If so, can you click the discover button on one of them from the control panel?  In any case, the logs should tell you what's going on.

No ccmsetup folder means the install was never attempted (maybe client push failed based on rights).
Finished ccmsetup - go to the ccm folder and start looking at all the logs.  Learn them all and what they do.  Hardest to read are policy logs, but you luckily don't have to read them often.  Mostly here what you're looking for 1st in this case would be locationservices.log and clientlocation.log

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your info.
So, is there any "manual" way to make the hostname appear in SMS console ?  Like in 2.0, I can copy the PC's .ddr file to the SMS servers' DDR.box ?

By the way did you check for the client version on the workstation what version they are indicating . I always like to check for the client version as Brian said the client are not installed .

Check out for following

Cleint Version :-

SMS 2003 Sp1 Version : 2.50.3174.1019

SMS 2003 Sp2 Version : 2.50.4160.2000

SMS 2003 Sp3 Version : 2.50.4253.3000

Check for Mobileclient.tcf and ccmsetup.log, client.msi to verify the sucessful installtion.

Check if the auto discover is returing back the correct site code

Check for cas.log , execmgr.log file if there is any problem in client commicating to MP you would see lots of error talking about the "Default setting is missing from WMI"

Also verify the WMI services are running the client installtion force WMI services to start.

How about the hearbeat discovery does it enabled or disabled ???

Yes creating a ddr for the pc and placing it the servers auth.box\ddr.box will create an entry in the SMS db, but it will not assign it to the site.  For that and as Brian had suggested, that you would need to check to make sure that that IPsubnet/AD site for the system is in th site boundaries.  This is the only way a client will be assigned to the site.

Hi All expert,

Thanks for your advise and info.
in fact, only several PC not showing in the SMS console, all the rest are fine....
I checked the PC has the correct site code assigned, but (strange) it doesn't appear in the SMS console.
Can you tell me the location of the DDR file in the client ?  Since I have searched the entire PC but cannot find it.....
Thanks again

Usually there is no DDR on a system.  The file is created and sent up shortly after its creation.  Take a look at the ddm.log yo check and see if a DDR  has been processed by the site.
