Status: offline 		We are shortly implementing Softgrid and currently deciding on the model we want for setup. I went on a course a few months ago and thought I vaguely remembered the tutor saying that Softgrid should work fine if the SQL db is unavailable, you just wouldn't be able to virtualise new applications. However in testing there appeared to be a performance issue whereby application startup seemed very slow. Can anyone confirm whether this is likely to be the case or that the issue we have experienced in testing maybe related to something else?

Status: offline 		I have seen the same slowness regardless of whether the application is fully cached or not.  My assumption is that because the stream server is available the client does not go into disconnect mode and is in essence timing out when trying to confirm the user still has access to the application.  The quick fix for this scenario is to either have your db configured for high availability where it one node drops the other picks up, or to put in place a process where when SQL is unavailable the SG service on the stream servers is stopped, which will force the clients into disconnected mode.

The negatives to this are that if something is not cached the user will not be able to get to it, and you will not be able to provision new applications until the SQL server comes back online.

Status: offline 		I think the key point to note is that the application will not launch if the user never launched the application before on that system (cached or not). Desktops won't feel this too badly because users usually launch their commonly used applications within a few days but a terminal server deployment will literally go on fire because the chances of the user launching all their commonly used applications on each terminal server in a sizable farm is not very likely.
