Can I import an MDT 2008 image into Windows Virtual PC? Monday, January 23, 2012 2:29 PM (permalink)

Hi All,

We have a Windows XP image that most of the company uses I build and deploy from MDT 2008. Is there a way to get that loaded on our Newer Windows 7 machines using the free Window Virtual Machine application? We just like to give developers the ability to open that specific image on their Windows 7 64bit machines to make things easier during testing.

Some info:
- We currently image machine using a boot .wim from a usb key/cd running winpe.
- We are using MDT 2008 for our XP Image although I do have access to an MDT 2010 installation we use for a few Windows 7 machines.

Thanks!

My first steps would be to migrae all of it to MDT 2010.  There is no need to use the older version.

As for using the virtual side.  I would do my best to get whatever it is that needs to be on XP updated/upgraded so it will work properly in WIN7 or use App-V for the app if possible.  We tried to use the win7 virtual environment and found it to be a huge headache to manage.

Just boot your VPC off the ISO created by MDT. and the rest will be just like deploying to hardware.. I would consider using VirtualBox or VMvare instead of VPC!

        Hi Michael,
Thanks for the advice, I went ahead and tried that and it did start to work, but after booting to WinPE and naming the machine the installation process never starts. It just kind of hangs out in MDT with a blank screen and a small command prompt box. At that point a status bar is suppose to start, but it never does. I click the command prompt and run an ipconifg, it's getting a valid IP. I'm looking into why it just stops at this point now. Thanks!

Does your LiteTouch ISO work on a physical machine?  Check out the smsts.log file.  This should help you determine what's hanging and where in the task sequence it's occurring.

            Hi JGillean,
It does work on a normal machine, and I was able to get it working by adding an entry for [Virtual Machine] in the bootstrap.ini file. Now I seem to be having an issue getting windows to install correctly. The installation seemed to hang half way through the “Running Action: Installing Operating System” progress bar. I walked away and came back an hour later and the screen was completely blank. After rebooting it I get the Windows Recovery screen where it gives me the options: Start Windows Normally, Start Windows (Last Good Configuration), and Start Safe Mode. If I start Safe Mode it get's stuck loading at agpCPQ.sys and hangs there until I reboot it. If I choose Start Windows (Last Good Configuration) it either goes blank or gives me an error at C:\Windows\System32 and asks me to run repair. This is in Virtual Machine on Windows 7 by the way and I'm installing XP.
