Can single SMS site support multiple AD domains in different forests?

We have an AD domain based on Windows Server 2000 with SMS 2003 SP2 installed.
And then we have created a new AD domain in a new forest based on Windows Server 2003 R2. There is a two-way trusts between those two domains.

I have tested that I can install SMS Advanced Client on the PCs in the new AD domain but the PC does not download any SMS packages we have advertised - it sopped with "... the content could not be located".

If we create SMS SLP or MP names on the WINS & DNS servers in the new AD domain, will this setup work?

Thanks & kind regards,

SS123

Hi cstauffer911,
Thank you very much to reply.

But I followed through your links and they do not answer my question. I am thinking that only ONE SMS site will be used to manage PCs in the two AD domains of different forests. Your links have used two SMS sites.

Still looking for answers for my questions.

Yes you can do this but it is a pain. How many clients do you have in the second domain? Have you created a connection account?

Hi Garth,
We have about 800 PCs in the AD 2000 domain and we will move them to the new AD 2003 domain.

We have not decided how to migrate the SMS servers in the AD 2000 domain to the new AD 2003 domain. But I want to find out can we still manage the PCs in the new AD 2003 domain after the PCs are migrated from the AD 2000 domain.

Thanks.

hum.. Is there a reason why you are not upgrading your AD to Win2k3?

With SMS or ConfigMgr, discoveries and automatically installing new clients will be a problem for you, for example. If you are creating a new AD then it is also a good time to upgrade to ConfigMgr and put the new site within the new AD. Then make the old site a Child primary site.

In the mean time add a connection account in the old domain added into SMS, be prepared to clean it up after site server moves. Remember that the site server name can't change. Also moving the site server from one domain to another will be a bit of a pain.

If you have a test lab this is the time to test everything you want to do. Unless money for a new site server is an issue, I would start clean in the new AD and make the old site a child primary site to the new site. This will be less of a headache & less OT for you and potential downtime to you clients.

Thank Garth. You have suggested how to migrate SMS from old AD to new AD - which is one of my other tasks.

It has been decided that we will create a new AD instead of upgprading the existing one - I cannot change it.

I have manually created WINS SLP and MP records on WINS servers in the new AD domain for our current SMS servers. The packages are installed properly. It seems works.

I am using AD System Discovery in our SMS implementation to find PCs in the current AD 2000 domain.

May I add another AD container to the new AD 2003 domain in order to discove PCs in the new domain? That is, there are two AD containers in the AD System Discovery: one for existing AD 2000 domain and the other for the new AD 2003 domain.

Thanks.

Yes, you can have two or more containers but I don't think you can have the one the other forest. BTW I would setup the SMS within the new forest instead of within the old forest. This will make you life easier down the road.
