This week I upgraded an  SMS 2003 SP2 server to SCCM SP1.  Everything went well, except that my Management Point seems to be having issues.  Looking in my MPSetup.log I see the following remarks every few hours:

mp.msi exited with return code: 1603
Fatal MSI Error - mp.msi could not be installed.

I have exhausted pretty much everything resource I could think of to fix it.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the MP, uninstalled IIS, BITS, and reinstalled everything, ran CCMclean.exe from the SMS 2003 Toolkit.  My next reasonable option seems to be sacrificing a goat, which I am a bit leery of doing .

Anyone have any ideas that would point in the the correct direction?

I know you've done all this, but maybe not in this specific order.  This falls under the "at least it's not a goat sacrifice" category of fix attempts.  ;-)

- From within the ConfigMgr console, remove the MP role.  Monitor MPSetup until you see the uninstall successful (usually takes a few minutes).
- Make sure no ccmsetup.exe is running in Task Manager.
- Remove IIS.  Reboot.  Re-add IIS (remember to add BITS extensions).
- Readd the MP role, and watch mpsetup.log.  If it doesn't succeed in say... 15 minutes.  Look at the other Mp log; I think it's MPMSI.log?  A few lines from the bottom it'll have the 1603 exit code; but if you scroll up & up, it will usually say why it really failed to install.

Just tried it.  Same thing.

The mpMSI.log file has quite a few errors in it.

  • ERROR: WEBDAV Web Service Extension is installed but not enabled on IIS
  • ERROR: ValidateWebServiceExtension failed with 0x80004005.
  • Product: SMS Management Point -- Internal Error 25056. 80004005
  • Internal Error 25056. 80004005
  • Property(S): SmsDetectColocationDowngrade_ErrorMessage = A newer version of the Configuration Manager Client is installed. Cannot continue installing this version of the management point.
  • InstallErrorDialog_Info = Setup encountered an error and could not continue.
  • Note: 1: 1708

the message about a newer version of SCCM installed puzzles me.  The server does have SP1 applied, but why would it matter when the server is the one doing the installation?

"ERROR: WEBDAV Web Service Extension is installed but not enabled on IIS "

To fix the WebDav need to be enabled issue...  I'm assuming this is Server 2003? Go to IIS Manager , the 'Web Service Extensions' branch, find WebDAV on the right, highlight it and click on the Allow button.  Try the MP install again; and see if that's the only thing it was complaining about.

Well that was it, I think.  I looked at mpMSI.log a thousand times but that never clicked in my head.  Thank you very much sir!
