I have a build and capture Task Sequence (MDT import) that has been working fine until I advertise Software Updates to the base collection. I have decided to put a large amount of updates into my image. I can see the updates download, install, and then it appears to fail out at the gather task. The error message is “Task Sequence has failed with the error code (0x000001AD). I will attach portions of the SMSTS.log below. The one line that sticks out is

Query SELECT MACAddress FROM Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration WHERE IPEnabled=true OR IPXEnabled=true failed (0x80080005)

The interesting thing is that this same unmodified TS works fine on a Dell Latitude laptop, software updates and all. So my question is twofold, what could be going on with the Virtual PC (Microsoft Virtual PC 2007)? Also I know it is recommended to use a VM as a reference system because of Drivers etc. I’ve taken the successful capture from the Dell Laptop and imaged a HP desktop with it and everything appears to be fine. Does sysprep of the reference machine do anything to strip of drivers and prepare the image to be hardware independent?

Thanks
neilp

There are lots of things that stick out to me in this log and the first thing to assk is whether you imported the NIC drivers for Virtual PC for use in your TS? To me it looks like you don't have connectivity.

Also, sysprep does not strip drivers, but Windows won't load drivers for devices that are not present in a system, so having extra drivers in an image doesn't hurt. It makes the image slightly larger, but that's minor. The hardware independance of an image in ConfigMgr doesn't have to do with extra drivers in an image, it has to do with the availability of of extra drivers via the drivers catalog.

I'm pretty sure the NIC drivers are available, the same TS works if I do not have software updates advertised to the machines collection. Also the whole process almost completes it is just after the software updates process that the TS fails.

I think I will just tear down the TS and start fresh.

thanks for the response.
