If your configuration is as such that you really only need a single site, which would also be considered a "central" site, to manage all of your systems, then by all means, assign the clients to it. The recommendation that you quoted is mostly for instances where you're going to need mulitple sites to manage your clients; such as when they are across WAN links in different geographical locations. Then you would have a site at each location, and they would report up to the central site at "headquarters". In this case, the central site is more of a reporting server as well as a means to maintain packages, advertisements and resource collections (for all sites) in a single location to make administration a little easier.
