I have successfully used a combination of SMS2003 advertisements and SCCM Pushes to upgrade over 1000 clients from SMS 2003 SP2 to SCCM SP1.

I am running SCCM in a mixed mode environment.  I am down to getting the last 20% of my clients upgraded.  When I reviewed the "Client Deployment Failure Report" report, the majority of the failures are "Failed to download file over WINHTTP at address:.  I then reviewed the ccmsetup log files on some of the Windows XP computers and they all have the following errors:

Running as user "SYSTEM"
Client OS is not Windows XP Embedded
Failed to successfully complete HTTP request. (StatusCode at WinHttpQueryHeaders: 401)
Sending Fallback Status Point message, STATEID='308'.
State message with TopicType 800 and TopicId {C88D243A-05E4-45E2-914A-D4CEF8903263} has been sent to the FSP
The language specific BITS version wasn't found (Failed to download 'WindowsXP-KB923845-x86-ENU.exe' from 'http://server.domainname.com/CCM_Client/i386/BITS25' with error code 0x80004005).

The client push agent is configured with a domain admin account. I saw a post on another web site saying to use the /noservice switch but I could not get that to run correctly.

Does anyone have any ideas?  It is strange that it worked for over 80% of the computers but not on this last group.

what I see in your log is that the clients do not have the current version of BITS, and cannot find the update in the path specified. You may need to deploy BITS to those clients before they will upgrade the client, or ensure that the patch is in the folder specified.

Thank you for the reply.  My understanding and experance is that after the client connects it downloads and installs the correct version of BITS.  So the BITS error would make scense because the system cannot connect to the install source to download BITS.

actually there are client reuirements that have to be met before the client will install, not sure if BITS is one of them, Sherry Kissinger posted some good info on this in the forum. The error also may indicate the OS language version is different than the patch version you have. It is definately looking for the ENU version, what SCCM/Client language version are you running, and does that file exist in the CCM_Client/i386/BITS25 folder?  All else fails I would manually deploy the patch to the clients that are having issues ( or try a manual install of the patch) to see if that resolves it.
