All, I’m having a bit of trouble understanding how to setup my client systems to retrieve MS updates via WSUS configured with SCCM 2007.  I have everything working properly on the server (at least I think I do) because it’s syncing properly with Microsoft to pull the monthly updates and the machines are checking in and displaying it’s statistics as to whether or not it needs the updates.  The problem is that the updates will only install when I set the ‘recurring schedule’ time on the client side.  If I turn that setting off the machines still check-in but never receive the updates.  Do I need to set  the ‘recurring schedule’ option and if so is there a way to do this on the server so the client gets changed automatically or because this is ‘WSUS’ do I need to setup the group policy and point the systems like I would if this was just a standalone WSUS server?    Thanks in advance for the help.

First, a Group Policy will conflict with the ConfigMgr update policy so don't apply one and make sure that none are being applied.

As for the rest of your issues, did you set up a Software Update Point?  Are your updates showing up in the Update Repository?  Have you created any Deployments?  Where are you seeing a 'recurring schedule' option? Deployments have specific deadlines, not schedules?

Are you attempting to control the update process via the WSUS console? If so, stop.  ConfigMgr only uses WSUS to download the update catlog from Microsoft and to distribute this catalog to clients.  All other functions, including downloading, targeting, and deploying updates is done via ConfigMgr.

Thanks for the reply, let me give some details on my situation. I have sccm sp1 all setup with wsus, and everything is working... for the most part.

The issue for me is that the client's will download the updates to cache, but not install it until the deadline has passed. I figured out that if i open the control panel on the client, click on the updates tab, and check the box to "install required updates on a schedule", then the clients will install it at it's leisure before the deadline.

I was wondering what is the correct way to configure this setting for everyone? I don't have any group policies in place. In the "Software Updates Client Agent" from the sccm console i have each tab enabled.

Thanks

The behvior that you've described is by design -- that's what the deadline is for. If you want to force the installation of updates earlier than the current deadline, then change the deadline. It's similar to a mandatory advertisment. User's of the system, if you have notification enabled, will be able to install updates "at their lesiure" before the deadline, but the clients themseleves will wait for the deadline.

Yea, that makes sence.

When I go in the contral panel/updates tab and check that box, the clients will install the "at their lesiure" before the deadline, and force at the deadline, without notification. That behavior seems ideal to me. So there isn't a way to configure that setting through the server?

It's not a big deal, the deadlines work well enough, I just feel like i'm missing something.
