Hi folks,

a customer of mine has a strange issue.

About 1,5 years ago, they'd set up a new SMS site including a new site code and a management point and moved all clients over to the new site code. A while later, they even cleaned out the Active Directory and removed the corresponding folders from the old SMS site.

Now, once in a while, a client seems to remember that there was another SMS site and shows up with an assignment of the old site code. Then it tries to connect to the old MP via http and fails. When doing a manual assignment in control panel, the client drops back to the new site code. It doesn't seem to be a matter of just a handful of clients.

There's no login script in place installing the client, client push properties have the correct site code set, no imaging, install command line for the SMS client contains the correct site code also. We ran out of ideas where else to check.

Anybody knows where the client might still keep this information or get it from? We've tried wbemtest but couldn't find a class yet containing the old site code. It's becoming a bit annoying now.  Thanks.

Ingrid

Have you checked WINs? Back a couple of versions users that were having issue with client assignment had to create a WINs entry for the management point. I would also check DNS to ensure all entries have been removed for the old server.

WINS and DNS don't have any entries left.
It looks like the clients have some sort of left-over in their WMI repository, the policy spy shows one single entry referring to the old server's site code. They've just created a VB script to delete this entry out of WMI to figure out if this caused the issue. Not sure yet.

It looks like the VB script did its job. Haven't heard from the customer yet that the issue is still present. Hopefully he got rid of the problem.

It seems that smsclient on that particular machine is not updated with the newer version of clients. It needs a repair with ccmsetup.
pls make sure that the server name/ip should not be exist in domain anymore.

Thanks.

I wasn't talking about a particular machine, but each client was randomly picking up the old site code once in a while. All clients were definitely installed with the new version of the sms client 1,5 years ago. The whole domain was cleaned regarding this old server name. There was some sort of left-over in the WMI of each client where nobody knew why it stayed there. Hopefully, the cleaning of WMI sovled the problem now.
