ConfigMgr 2007 Interview Questions
Thursday, April 29, 2010 3:28 PM
( permalink)
I' d like to start a thread that can be captured into a document for posting to the site. Frequently, I receive emails asking for a list of questions to ask ConfigMgr 2007 interviewees, and it would be nice to gather the best questions and make them available on the site. Post your best interview questions here...

The best questions are the ones where there are multiple correct answers. Here's one: What are the causes for a slow ConfigMgr07 Console connection and what would you do to make your ConfigMgr Console users' experience better? Multiple answers to that one--from deep network connectivity fixes, to standing up remote consoles, to replacing the console for most of your Console users to use some other method to get their job done, like a front-end web page, or use reporting instead of trying to use Collections as a reporting medium. Whatever answer or answers the person provides, you can tell a lot about how much they know about Configmgr, how it works, the pain points and how to work around them.

I suspect we should answer those here, too. Once we have a good number, we'll wrap them up in a nice PDF.

I think task-based 'How' questions would get you a better understanding of the capability an applicant has over 'What' questions. 'What' questions gauge how much someone knows about the specifics of a component of ConfigMgr and show only a narrow field of experience and technical understanding. 'How' questions are usually open ended and allow the applicant to showcase their solution to the given scenario - which can often be out of the box of your own thinking. E.g. We want to ensure all our laptops have 5 core apps installed at all times, and when removed - re-installed. How would you do this? We want to implement NAP in our production environment, how would you begin this task? Our compliance department, outside of IT, need up-to-the-minute data of computers with specific licensed applications installed. How would you deliver this to them?

My favorite interview challenge is "Tell me about the last ConfigMgr hierarchy you worked on." You'll get everything from a very detailed explanation of each of the sites and roles and good reasons for the implementation strategy, to "I don't know, it was set up before I started there." Asking how to inventory locally attached printers will also get some very creative responses.

One of my favorites is name a few tables and views out of the SCCM database and tell me what they are used for.

I would ask more about scenarios and possible rollbacks or failures they have encountered. Another big question is if they have used some type of change management process or software. Even if someone is savvy or a novice if they are pushing or installing software and such without approval could be worse than any knowledge of the product.

1. You want specific users\groups to run specific custom reports. What should you do? 2. You have been provided with permissions on the sccm console to create, distribute, modify and delete packages? However, when distributing a package there is no Distribution points listed in the Distripution Point Wizard. What should you do? 3. You want to assign a user a permission to create a specific package under a folder that contains other packages. What should you do?
