We are running SMS 2003 and trying to decide whether we should move forward to SCCM or look at alternatives for software distribution. I’m hoping someone out there in SMSland can help me answer these questions. When we started with SMS our threads were set to 13 (Site Settings->Component Configuration->Software distribution-> Distribution Points Tab, under Concurrent Distribution settings the Max threads per package). This setting can be set to 50. Is there a formula or process to determine what to set this too? Does increasing the threads increases the CPU, if so what would be the hardware for SCCM? We do notice that during the replication the threads will go to sleep for anywhere from 6 minutes to ½ hour randomly. What causes the threads to go to sleep, there is nothing else running on the servers? When we increased the threads to 50, we did saturate our outbound MPLS. We currently have 164 packages replicated to 16 Secondary sites and 64 Distribution Points. They are looking to deploy at least 100 more packages, some as large at 6GB. They want these packages on the remote sites within 24 hours of being created.
