I have been tasked with creating a ddr to pull information about client health, wmi, registry key rights, etc...

I have been scrounging the net to find some good documentation but have so far come up empty (can find a paragraph or 2 but nothing in depth). The help menu item from within the console has very little in it as well.

Does anybody have any good documentation on how exactly ddr’'s work, how to create custom ddr’s (c#), what impact ddr’s will have on an sms infrastructure.

My infrastructure has over 70,000 workstations in more than 10 countries with many poor networks (think 2 cans and a string). A minor impact on bandwidth can have major affects. (This shouldn’t be an issue since it is all run over bits, but I like to be able to know if any impact will occur with this)

If anybody could post me some links, with in depth feedback I would be greatly appreciative.

A DDR is a data discovery record, the result of a Discovery Data Manager process. Reviewing the process you're referencing, I believe you're talking about updating your SMS_def.mof file or creating a custom MOF file which will collect additional data. I'd recommend doing more research on customizing MOF files instead of looking to DDR information.

Ok that being said I have 2 databases that already contain the data I am looking for.

Asking around I hear that a DDR would just be a flat file stuck in the ddm.box. Would you suggest creating the DDR flat file (how do I do this?) or just creating a view within the sms database?

The first database is the Client Health db that is residing on the same box as the sms central db. The 2nd db is on a different box which is populated by an in-house tool.

A view would allow me to create a linked server and not have to move data from any of the 3 databases involved. Creation of the DDR would require me to write a service to gather the information (which would be more work) but is also considered best practice by Microsoft.

Which do you think would be a better way to go. If the second seems like the ideal choice, how do I create a DDR?

Yeah, I'd totally forget about the DDR and link to the remote DBs. I wrote an article a little while ago on getting data from DB's outside your SMS database into your web reports
