Hi all,

I'm running deploymentworkbench 4.1.  I opened it up yesterday, and lo and behold, it had lost all its config.  I managed to recreate the distribution share, and the task sequences are there.  Last night all my make and models in the db had been lost.  I got the bench to see the db, and not I've got my makes and models back.  but not my deployment points.  The DPs and the shares for them are still on the machine, but I can't recreate the deployment points as they are because if I go into the DP share and try to create a new OSD share for example, it will tell me the share already exists.

can anyone tell me how to restore a workbench that has gotten so confused?  Where would these settings be stored within the WB so I can reconfigure it back to my settings?  I'd hate to have to set it up from scratch again, now that I've got it working nice.

Thanks!

You can edit the Deploy.XML file located at

\Program Files\Microsoft Deployment Toolkit\Control

A good practice to have back up "\Program Files\Microsoft Deployment Toolkit\Control \Deploy.xml".  Wont help you now but, restoring that file has saved me in the past.  As Sharino said above... if you manually edit the Deploy.xml file you can add the paths in there.  That will by-pass the wizard telling you that the path exists.  Keep in mind each deploy path has to have a unique GUID.

Oh, and anyone have any other advice as to what other key files need to get backedup on workbench?    Seems this was corrupted for a while.  never noticed because it's still working for deployment.

In the future, I'll burn key files to a safe place.

thanks all!

here's a question. Let's assume I have rebuild my deployment points (very likely since I have no idea what the deploy.xml should look like and mine is empty).  Once rebuilt, can I copy the old data into the Deployment folder structure and make everyting happy?  Or must I rebuild everything by building it from scratch?

Edward, I let the workbench generate my GUIDs by running the wizard and putting in generic invalid network paths.  That creates a guid for me(probably not the most efficient way).  I then modify the XML file with the correct data.  It has been a life saver for me.  I have 40 distribution points with 2 seperate auto task sequences at each site.  It would have been a pain to configure each one on thier own.

Also, when I make any major changes I back up the deploy.xml file.  If I dont like the settings I close the workbench and replace the xml file with the backup, restores my old setting instantly.
