Under a handful of "unique" circumstances, WINS is still required. For example, an SLP record in WINS would be required if you want to deploy the client using CCMSETUP, where CCMSETUP automatically retrieves deployment parameters from AD, but AD hasn't been extended. In this situation, however, WINS would NOT be required if AD has been extended. Another circumstance that can involve WINS (but does not require WINS if DNS is used instead) is regional roaming when AD isn't extended. In this case, if an SLP isn't deployed, the management points need to be registered in WINS or DNS. I cannot think of every possible configuration, but off the top of my head, I would say that in most (if not all) cases, you don't have to use WINS if you're using DNS and AD has been extended.
