Im slightly confused with the whole DNS and WINS issue.
I have multiple forest, multiple domain, sms2003 sp2, environment with the schema extended for my site server domain (and some clients) and currentlty publish everything (MP,SLP) to WINS for remote clients.
Clients are XP and W2K3
I was expecting to be publishing everything now (about to upgrade to SCCM) to DNS as I thought this was the preferred method of discovery/communication (order being - please correct me if wrong - AD/DNS/SLP/WINS). Yet SCCM docs state use WINS for remote clients (different forest) or instances where you havent extended the schema. Can someone help - please?
Is WINS still required for SCCM operation cross forests?
Can I put my entries in DNS ONLY and expect everything to work OK?

Under a handful of "unique" circumstances, WINS is still required.

For example, an SLP record in WINS would be required if you want to deploy the client using CCMSETUP, where CCMSETUP automatically retrieves deployment parameters from AD, but AD hasn't been extended. In this situation, however, WINS would NOT be required if AD has been extended.

Another circumstance that can involve WINS (but does not require WINS if DNS is used instead) is regional roaming when AD isn't extended. In this case, if an SLP isn't deployed, the management points need to be registered in WINS or DNS.

I cannot think of every possible configuration, but off the top of my head, I would say that in most (if not all) cases, you don't have to use WINS if you're using DNS and AD has been extended.

Mark - sorry for the delay, been a bit busy.

Putting some thought into this, it seems there are a few scenarios:
Client install - push/manual. If push and SLP is in DNS, the client should find the MP and hence the site server. If manual, the SLP reference can be placed in the ccmsetup parameters and hence no requirement for WINS. If clients are in remote forests/domains, the entry would have to be in the root level DNS server for the environment.

Client operation - once installed there shouldnt be any issues.

In your first scenario with SLP in WINS if no AD extensions have been made - why couldnt this entry be in DNS?
I think in all situations, Im assuming there is an SLP deployed in DNS and therefore a route for clients to find an MP.
Is there something Im missing?

Ok, so it sounds like DNS should work for the deployment of the client using ccmsetup when a SLP is published in DNS. Is this correct? And if so can someone point me to the correct configuration of DNS to make this work? I used WINS to get things working, but I would prefer the option of just using DNS without extending the schema. Thanks.

The only scenario that I can think of that Mark did not address was "workgroup" computers. While there may be a way to use DNS with a non-domain computer, I am not aware of it. I ran into problems with workgroup computers until I added the SLP entry into WINS. Then they worked...

Anyone know a way to use DNS with workgroup computers?
