Hi all,

SMS 2003 with MDT 2008 upd 1 running ZTI as much as possible.

I updated some packages in my workbench for the new DEll systems, and updated my SMS DPs with the new files.  Now, my OSD is working fine but for some reason the default packages are not installing.  Location and model specific apps are loading from SMS, but it's the defaults that are being missed.  I had to rebuild my MDT, so I might have missed something when I rebuilt it.

here's the pertinent parts of my Rules:

[Settings]
Priority=CSettings, CPackages, CApps, CAdmins, CRoles, Locations, LSettings, LPackages, LApps, LAdmins, LRoles, MMSettings, MMPackages, MMApps, MMAdmins, MMRoles, RSettings, RPackages, RApps, RAdmins, Default
Properties=MyCustomProperty

[Default]
OSInstall=Y
UserDataLocation=NONE
ResourceRoot=\\server.fqdn.com\distribution$
OSDNEWMACHINENAME=%COMPUTERNAME%
SQLServer=SMSserver.fqdn.com
SQLShare=SMSClient
Packages1=GRP00001-ERM Install
Packages2=BOS00017-OSD
Packages3=GRP00015-Per-system unattended
Packages4=BOS00042-Per-system unattended
Packages5=GRP00011-Per-system unattended
Packages6=GRP00016-Per-system unattended
Packages7=BOS00037-Per-system unattended
Packages8=BOS00022-VNC Setup
Packages9=BOS00022-Installer
Packages10=BOS00034-rename
Packages11=GRP0001E-Per-system unattended

[SMS]
SQLServer=Server.fqdn.com
Database=SMS_BOS
Table=v_Program
Parameters=PackageID,ProgramName......

I feel like I'm missing something obvious.

I had listed my packages in an [ALL] section too, but that didn't make a difference.  The OSD logs don't show any errors, it's as if  scripts don't see those packages at all.  Customsettings.ini and bootstrap.ini are identical and I verified that this is the settings on my DPs.  I updated the files in my OSD deployment point, and also updated the files in SMS as well, and refreshed my DPs too just to make sure I'm not totally crazy.

Anyone have any advice as to what I might have missed or where to look?

thanks!

I'm assuming that you were previously deploying your default packages using the .INI file method just fine; so I'd ask... Are you kicking this off using a CD? If so, did you update those files and burn a new disc?

That's correct.  It had been running fine.

I'd burned a new disk, but have made a few changes since then.   I didn't think they would require a new disk, but I'll try burning a new one.  Couldn't hurt.

Thanks for the idea.

Well, I burned the new disk, and now I've got 2 problems.  the new disk hangs on the Partition prep portion of the install on the E4300 laptops, even with the battery removed.  but I can tell it's STILL not seeing the default apps.

I was under the impression that the WinPE disk would pull the CustomSettings.ini from the SMS DP share and read that for it's key information (db access, etc.)   It's pulling the right .ini file, and I can't see any problems with the .ini file.

What could cause the install process to NOT run the packages outlined in the settings above?  Or perhaps something else that might help me analyze this.. what IS the process for the ZTI to review this file and recognize the settings in the ini as something to be followed?   ZTI IS finding packages assigned via the MDT database, so it's clearly seeing the db, and the ini file in some capacity.

For some info on how the CustomSettings.ini and Bootstrap.ini files are used in the process, take a look about 3/4 of the way down this page:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb490322.aspx

And if it's still not seeing your default apps, you might double-check the syntax for that. Honestly, I always did mine by Roles and not hard-coding them into the .INI files. If I remember right, there should be a sample CustomSettings.ini file at the end of the document in this article: http://www.myitforum.com/articles/8/view.asp?id=11032

I think I'm just going to have to do this via roles.  not sure why this stopped working . Seems to be related to when I upgraded to the latest MDT.
