Hello,

just taken over and account which to be frank, is a bit of a mess, there doesn't appear to be much in the way of a naming convention.

Once problem is that lots of programs (for various apps) are simply called 'install'. Now i guess this isn't too much of a problem however when i wanted to delete one of these programs, using the delete wizzard, it warns me about what adverts it thinks are related to this program and thus wants to delete those adverst as well. However, the wizzard shows every single advert that is related to ANY program that happens to be called 'install', i.e. lots of other packages too! So i have about 40 adverts it wants to remove, which of course i don;t want to do!

If i try to delete the actual package, the wizzard works ok, i,e shows which program to delete and the appropriate advert (this time just shows the correct one not lots)

So for the most part i am fine as have just one program in a package thus can delete the lot, however i have a few packages that have mulitple programs and i only wish to deleted the 'install' one

So is this some sort of bug, can it be fixed?

thanks for you time
BP

I wish I knew!  When I took over SMS here EVERY install was named something like "install" or "silent install" and deleting them has always been a pain...

hey joemonkey

so how did you go about deleting the programs without the adverts going too?

its quite strange as there doesn't appear to be much info about it on the web and i would have thought this prblem would have been well documented!

cheers
BP

I just left them.  They weren't hurting anything :)

well i would start by removing the advertisemetns and not the program.  I personlay would not deleted the program or adv. just disable it.

well to be honest thats what I do, expire the adverts i mean, always thought that was best practice, and as as you both say, the programs aren't really harming anyone, but you know when something just plays on your brain, even now its shouting 'why but why does it do that!'

I think i'll make a cup of tea and worry about something else :-)

I noticed this on our system a while ago and tested the scenario on our test system. Although the initial "delete program" wizard suggests that it is about to delete a bunch of other adverts associated with a program of the same name, it doesn't actually delete the irrelevant adverts if you keep nerves of steel and click "Finish"!
I would of course suggest testing this for yourself first...

Don't worry, it's a quirk with SMS :)  It's not that intelligent and I guess just looks for any advert linking to a program with the same name, regardless of whether it's actually linked to it or not.

We use 'Install' and 'Uninstall' for our program names for pretty much all our packages.

thanks for the replies chaps

However, even if I get it to work on my test env, I may still fail the 'nerves of steel' test in real life

thanks again for all the advise

You can go ahead with deleting the program. I had the same issue and also discovered the same findings as ChrisR in my test environemtn. However, I also opened a ticket with Microsoft Premier Support, and they confirmed that it is a "display" bug of the wizard. Deleting the program will actually only delete the advertisement associated with that program. It will not get fixed in SMS2003 anymore, but it should be fixed in SCCm 2007. The reason for that is (I think), that SMS doesnt generate an ID for SMS programs, there are only separate IDs for packages, advertisements, collections, etc. but not for programs. The program is really referenced in SMS (on the server as well as on the client) by its name. A little inconsistent, but good to know.
