Dell Latitude E6410 - PxE - NIC issue Thursday, July 01, 2010 11:36 PM (permalink)
5
Unable to image new Dell Latitude E6410s we've received.  The machine will attempt to start WinPE and will display "Windows is starting" and briefly display "Preparing network connections" and hang at the default background/splash screen for a few seconds and reboot before prompting to select a task sequence.  Added the Vista x86 NIC driver to the boot image yesterday and it worked briefly (was able to select task sequence/image), but after importing the additional drivers (driver pack from dell's site) into a driver package it has not worked.  I removed the additional drivers and driver package (which were not added to the boot image FYI), but still does not work correctly.  I have also tried the WinPE, Win7, and XP (XP is useless (I know) as WinPE requires Vista or higher).  Deleting and readding the driver that worked briefly does not work either.  Has anyone else ran into this issue or found the NIC driver that resolves this issue?

Thanks.

You need the Windows 7 driver for WinPE 3.0.

Should be an E1k62x32 or E1k62x64, it's an Intel 82577LM.

Thanks for the reply.  I dl'ed the latest Win7 driver from Intel's site and imported it and added to the boot image (x86), but same result (after "windows is starting" and right before "enter password and select a task sequence") it hangs for a few seconds and reboots.  It was the e1k6232.inf as you stated.  I added all the drivers from inside the PRO1000 directory (underneath WIN32 when extracted) and still failed.  We are using WinPE 3.0.  Any other suggestions?

        Thanks.

Tried this driver already and unfortunately no change for me =/

Have spent a few hours on this already and am not having much luck locating a driver that we can add to the boot image that resolves this issue.

I struggled with a similar issue for quite awhile.  I eventually found that adding the WINDOWS 7 version of the Intel 82567LM-3 Gig. Network.. Driver (Version 11.5.4.0 Version Date 11/5/2009) to my custom boot image worked for me.  YMMV.  I tried many other versions and none of them worked.

I hope this helps.  Good luck.  I feel your pain.

Tried this one too, but unfortunately no change.  Found the version you recommended here:

Going to keep trying, but I'm running out of options.  PxE is working fine for other laptops/desktops so it has to be related to the NIC, but I've tried a ton of drivers at this point without any luck =/ Confirmed by using the SCCM custom image disc and it failed to find a valid network adapter.

Also, I had to practically blow away most all the drivers from the boot image and start over.

Driver I'm using: Intel(R) 82567LM-3 Gigabit Network Connection
                  Version: 11.5.10.0
                  Date: 12/10/2009

I use the x64 version and popped it right into the 3.0 PE boot image. Worked fine.

One thing you might check - sounds crazy - but check to make sure your SATA mode is not in RAID.

Yea, unfortunately I've done that too.  The additional boot image drivers added in SCCM are pretty bare because the majority we use are already built into the image.  I have no additional added now and I am trying one last import today before I give it a rest and give it a go again over the weekend.  I just finished dl'ing and extracting the win 7 drivers pack and will import all of the Intel network drivers and add to the boot image to see if it works.  I'm not holding my breath, but you never know....

I've had this problem too.  It seems that the PE loads a similar but wrong driver for the NIC and causes the problem.

I had to pull all the NIC drivers out of my image, and when I added the 7 driver alone it worked.  Then I added other drivers in until I found my problem driver and kept it out of my PE images.  Wish I could tell you what the driver was the caused the problem, but that's what I did.

Having the same problem.  My Boot image is clean.  First driver I added was this Intel NIC driver for the E6410.  PE still reports (Failed to find a valid network adapater).  Including from newly created boot media.

Yea, I'm still having fun with this one...both Intel and Dell support are clueless when it comes to WinPE/imaging.  I've tried every driver possible, all XP drivers (to be safe), all Vista, all Win 7, all WinPE and nothing has worked to this point.  I am starting to think the working driver is corrupt in the driver store or something similar, but am not sure.  Any thoughts?

If it makes you feel any better, I'm having the exact same issue with our new 6410...I doubt it's that a driver went corrupt, all of my other systems' drivers have been fine and multiple ppl are having trouble with the 6410's NIC drivers...I've been assuming it is just conflicting with another driver, however Matt's comment is disconcerting...

I guess I'll start testing that anyways though and see if I can be patient enough to figure out which driver (if any) it is that needs to get an RPG in the face

BTW - I'm still using PE 2.1 (Vista), so it is not just an issue with 3.0.

Yea, only was speculating an issue with the driver store because I did have it working briefly on the first day of tackling this.  Found a vista driver (e1y6....inf; can't remember off-hand) that worked, but a few hours later did not.  Cleaning the boot image and readding this driver does not work either so I have since removed it.

I have pretty much imported all available drivers for this NIC from Intel's site and any version from Dell's and so far none are turning up any results.  Not sure why it worked brielfly on day 1, only thing I did after it worked was import the driver pack for the e6410 and add to a driver package for this model so it could be auto-applied with MDT.  Once it was not working I removed the drivers from the driver package and then from SCCM completely to ensure they were not the culprit.  Wasn't a complete waste as the imported drivers were causing a video card driver conflict for the m6500s so at least it cleared that up.

i have mine working with the

                                    Intel(r) 82567LM Gigabit Network Connection
                                    Version - 9.50.14.2

I can post it if anyone needs it or want to give it a shot

All I could find (even after contacting Dell and Intel) for this version was a DUP (driver update package) for the XP driver and the compatibility was for the E6400, not the E6410.  If you are using this driver can you please post as I would be interested in checking it out.

                                    Thanks

Driver I'm using: Intel(R) 82567LM-3 Gigabit Network Connection
                                      Version: 11.5.10.0
                                      Date: 12/10/2009

I use the x64 version and popped it right into the 3.0 PE boot image. Worked fine.

One thing you might check - sounds crazy - but check to make sure your SATA mode is not in RAID.

Still haven't seen if anyone has tried changing the SATA mode in the BIOS to make sure it's not in RAID. RAID is the default setting with the Dell's and it caused me considerable headaches - including the problem to which you are referring.

My laptops are all set to ATA when they are received from Dell, and I am still getting this problem on our 6410s...not because we have experienced issues with RAID, but because my company requires all laptops to use special hard drives with hardware encryption that require ATA mode...anyways, yes issue is still occuring outside of RAID mode.
