I am settting up WSUS for the first time and the initial sync is taking forever to finish.

I first set it to run and it begain to synchronize with status messages like "Processed 2330 out of 24730 items" and it would go up every 7-10 minutes by one-hundred. Ie Processed 2430 out of 24730, processed 2530 out of 24730.

It ran from 1:00 PM until 3:00AM the next day and had reached 41% when the porocess timed out.

Then it just did "sync failed" every 60 minutes after that for two days. Then this AM, it started synching again

At 3:15 AM, I got "Processed 100 out of 6423 items" This time it is going up by 100 every 20-30 minutes - much more slowly than before.

I can't figure out why the sync is going so slowly - or is that normal. The server is a dual core Xeon 2.4 with 4GB of memory. It is on the primary site server, but I am just in the process of building, so there are no clients reporting to this server yet. How long is that initial synch supposed to take? The documentation says it could take more than an hour, but I am on hour 8 and it is only 38% done. Text files are being created in my WsusContent folder.

what are you downloading. If you are downloading allthe catalog, it will take for EVER the first time. Took about 6-8 hours for me.

I have checked Security Update, Service Packs, and Update Rollups. Office 2003, Office 2007, Windows IE 7, Vista, CP, Windows Media, and Visual Studio 2005 & 2008. English Only. This is about 6400 objects. The problem is that it is only reporting 100 objects synced every 20-30 minutes.

I am right at 12-hours and it says it is 50% complete. This is on a server with pleanty of memory (4GB) and only 1 client assigned so far. The processor is at 50% pretty solid, there is no memory paging (15 pages per second), and the disk queue is sitting between 0 and 0.03.
