I'm running SMS 2003, sp3.  We're a small outfit, so I only have the one server.  It performs all the roles for us.  It's installed to a D:\ drive that is on a logical disk provided by our SAN.  The LUN is misaligned.  I need to recreate the partition w/ diskpart.exe to fix the alignment issue.  Is my best bet to halt all SMS related services, do a backup, fix/recreate the partition, and restore from tape?

I also have my packages saved to this partition, along w/ part of the SQL server install.  This version of SMS runs w/ the built in SQL server included.  I do not have an outside SQL server supporting SMS.  I do a regular SMS Site backup, but that won't help me w/ the SMSPKG & SMSPKGD$ directories I have on this drive as well, right?

Any advice on how best to wipe and restore?

I'd do a full backup of the SQL database as well as the application source files (Not SMS, the packaged applications). Trash the D$, fix your LUN, restore your source packages to the same location, then re-install SMS and perform a SQL recovery.

You'll basically be following the normal DR procedure's.

Check out the DR guide at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=d2562e2b-640b-4ab7-ab5a-37995acf2458&displaylang=en

I know you guys know this product way better than I, but those procedures sure look complicated for my scenario.  Can I not kill all SQL and SMS services, run a tape backup of my D$, then trash D$, fix LUN, restore from tape, and reboot?  Obviously I would manually do a site server backup just b/f starting any of this.

Am I way off?  I only have one site server for my entire network.

If you're just going to keep everything on the same drive letter, then there's no reason you couldn't just stop all SMS/SQL services (disable them so they don't restart on you), move the files off of D:, fix D:, move everything back, and restart services (I guess you'd also have to put back the shares if you did it this way).

So yeah, I don't see a reason why a physical backup/restore of the D: drive wouldn't suffice as long as it puts back all of the file security, auditing and shares.  No need to do DR stuff if you're keeping the same drive and just fixing the underlying alignment but keeping the same drive letter.
