Dualbooting between Windows PE (WinPE) and Windows XP might be the very useful when dealing with various deployment scenarios, including recovery scenarios. Or if you simply want an uber-recovery console :)

And... a question... I haven' t heard this elsewhere, so... IF you already have a pre-SP2 Recovery Console installed on the hard drive, do you need to update it to SP2 bits? Or can you re-run " winnt32.exe /cmdcons" from a slipstreamed media to replace/install?

Not really, it' s only bootsect.dat that is needed and this binary is only a partition table dump. Should be the same for any SP level.

For what I have tested more recent loaders (setupldr.bin renamed to cmldr) are compatible backwards.

Hi,
I have following scenario: Windows XP Prof installed on a primary partition say C: of the harddisk. Now I need to make this machine boot in winpe, the next time it restarts. I copied the boot folder, bootmgr, BootSect.exe and the winpe.wim renamed to boot.wim in Sources folder on this C: parition.
Now if I execute the C:\BootSect.exe /nt60 C:, it does not allow me to change the boot sector as the files on C: are in use and hence cannot be locked.
So, what if I want to achieve this? I know if I create an additional partition say D: and in stead of C: copy these files to this new parition, make it active and now if I execute C:\BootSect.exe /nt60 D:, it will change the bootsectors correctly and also boot to winpe on restart. However, I cannot have a new parition on this machine as my primary partition covers fulldisk and no unallocated space available (though there is free space on C: itself).
If you have any idea with which I can achieve this, it would be really helpful. Or if you have any knowledge of how I can make this happen using a ramdisk or something, please do let me know.
Looking forward to your help.
Thanks!!

So you want to dualboot between Windows XP and Windows PE 2.0 using the new Vista bootloader?

Yes. I have got it working :-) Thanks for your interest though.
Even if it gives an error for the BootSect.exe /nt60 SYS /force, it does boot to winpe on next restart. So job is accomplished.
