Hello,

Our advert for syncing the Update Tool is failing. When I check the WSUSSync.XML.log here is what i see:

Initialized log file - SyncXML started at 8/13/2008 9:21:47 AM
Sync task started with command-line = /s /site BRKSVW87 /code NAV /package NAV00070 /target \\BRKSVW87\PackageSrc
User Account: NONE
User Profile: C:\Documents and Settings\Default User
Download failed - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=74689
Sync tool failed to download "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=74689".  Error code: 1
Loaded "F:\SMS_CCM\smscstat.dll"; the module handle is 0x188F0000.
CreateSMSStatusMessage() succeeded; the status message object handle is 0x00E2F678.
ReportSMSStatusMessage() succeeded.

I've tried reruning the advert manually several times. Same results and error.

If I rerun the scanxml command line manually as me I get the same error message.

I've verified that i can get out to the internet from the server, and I can even manually download the CAB file.

I guess my real problem is I'm not seeing any of the latest Q#'s related to the newest patches released yesterday in the wizard.

Is there a way to manually sync the cab file so that the wizard will contain the newest Q #'s?

or

Does anyone know why the advert is failing (error level 1).

Any insight, or help would be appreciated!

Thanks

You "should" be able to go directly to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=74689 from any web browser, and download the .cab file.  Once you get it remember to right-click properties on it, and unblock it if it blocked.  Then just add it to your source folder where the old .cab file lives, and manually update distrib points for the package.

Reasons why it may be failing (at least ones that I've encountered in the past, anyway):
1) The Firewall team need to allow the ip address of my syncing server through the firewall without user credentials -- because of course I've changed the Sync Program to run under System context, not user context (right?  you did that, right?  Makes it easier for you in the long run)
2) Our Internet Service Provider caches content, and the file on the other end of that link above was cached context, so it was last month's cab file--even though microsoft released a new one, I couldn't get it from work.  (Workaround (for me anyway) when I was under the gun, was to ask someone on our technology team in a different state that I knew went through a different cloud go get me the file, and drop it up on the network for me to steal, then I did the above steps to get the updated .cab out there.)

Copy the command line to a batch or cmd file and run it manually from the command prompt to see it is works.  If so then it is a permissions issue on the account used to connect and pull down the cab file.

Hey Folks,

Thanks for the responses! Turns out our server team tried to apply SP2 to the OS without our knowledge, but the SP2 deployment failed and they backed out. That left the server in limbo, and we started seeing issues like the one above...

Long story short, we had them apply SP2 and all is well again....

Again thanks for the help,
J-
