Hello everyone.
I was wondering where I can find the ITMU flow process from beginning to End.  Meaning how it works.  Something easy to read. Like "ITMU process for Dummies"  I've been applying patches with my company for only 6 months now and was told how to do it but never got into how it worked behind the scenes. So we already have it in place. We create the patches package, test it, deploy it. I'm trying to get a hold of how the "behind the scenes" works information. I know our primary site server checks and downloads the Wsusscn2.cab file from Microsoft.  I don't know how the clients get this file, is it from Microsoft or the primary Site server or Both?. I'm not sure if the client has to run maybe the UpdateWUScatalog.exe file? I know there is other progams built into ITMU like Microsoft Sync tools (expedited), already created by Microsoft when ITMU was created in SMS. Then there is this Patchinstall.exe file and patchAuthorize.xml files inside the Patches package. Then there's this SMSWushandler.exe , ScanWrapper.exe, and others inside the %windir%\system32\VPCache\###00091 folder and I know they have something to do with it.  I don't know where this folder came from but it appears on new imaged pcs. So it's questions like these I need answers to. A nice Flow Chart process drawing would help. If anyone knows of a site or maybe a link on this site that can explain how it works I would really appreciate it.

Thanks
Jerry

Thanks criticalerror
but which process starts out 1st. Just click the link starting on top and then down? Software Update Services: Inventory Scan Tools Setup runs first? and then catalog download, etc?

Thanks

It really depends on your setup as to when everything happens but my environment works like this.

on the second wednesday of every month at 1am the Update Sync runs which grabs the newest catalog from MS and stores it in the source folder of the MS Updates Tool package.
I set the source files to update the distribution point on wednesday 2am once a week
The update tool runs on wednesdays at 4am every week (updates the client catalog stored in vpcache)
I set my patch advertisement to run at 5am. The day is determined by the specific servers maintenance window.

So sync, update/scan, deploy, scan.

So the order depends on when you how you have everything setup. Hope that helps.

Yeah it helps some what but I want to know the stuff inside each step. Like what runs, the package runs an exe file called syncxml.exe or patchinstall.exe? and what log files are important on the client side. I know PatchInstall.log, Scanwrapper.log, smswushandler.log and CCmexec.log and others during these steps is what I'm looking for. I know I'm asking a lot but security or my manager sometimes asks me why certain pcs didn't get patched and then I have to look in sms and try and find what didn't happen. So if I had my ITMU process laid out before me, I could diagnose the problem more quicker.

Thanks
Jerry

This is pretty nice. The Patch Process link is dead though... can someone fix it?
