With ITMU scan on Windows XP SP1 machines, the resultant says SP2 is applicable, so if I authorize SP3, it won't install on these machines. Is this correct? If not, how do I get SP1 machines to get SP3 package using ITMU

what does the patchinstall.log, show for the install? does it attempt the install and fail?

what SMS SP? are you on, SP2, SP3?

MS no longer support SP1 so dont know if this is the cause. If you try to upgrade from SP1 to SP2 is that successful?

I'm on SMS SP2, Windows Server 2003 SP2.

The scanwrapper.log on a client machine (Windows XP SP1) says Windows XP SP2 is applicable, it doesnt say SP3 is applicable. Now even if I authorize XP SP3, it doesnt apply to this machine. How can this be achieved.

So that means, patchinstall.log has no mention of any install.

Is this a bug in ITMU or its a normal behaviour

SMS 2003 SP2 support officially ending with MS from 8th July 08, do yo have any plans to update to SMS 2003 SP3? SP3 lets you support Vista, XP SP3 etc.

I'm thinking as SP1 is no longer supported it could be by design (not 100% though).

going to update to SMS SP3 next weekend. Meanwhile, in the test lab, the XP machines with SP1 still give XP SP2 as applicable, with ITMU v3 from SMS SP3 box.

Even if I run automatic updates from MS site, XP SP2 comes up as applicable and no SP3. Why is that? How can I update from XP SP1 to SP3 directly without manually doing it.?

I have been looking around the net to try and find an definitive answer but unable to.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/cc164204.aspx#2 states
General RequirementsBack to Top
To install SP3, your computer must meet the hardware and operating system requirements listed below. In addition, your computer must at least be running Windows XP with Service Pack 1 installed. We recommended that you have Service Pack 2 installed before installing SP3. You can download Service Pack 2 at the Windows XP Service Pack 2 website.

however the download link for SP3 stateshttp://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=68C48DAD-BC34-40BE-8D85-6BB4F56F5110&displaylang=en#filelist
System Requirements
  • Supported Operating Systems: Windows XP; Windows XP Home Edition ; Windows XP Home Edition N; Windows XP Media Center Edition; Windows XP Professional Edition ; Windows XP Professional N; Windows XP Service Pack 1; Windows XP Service Pack 2; Windows XP Starter Edition; Windows XP Tablet PC Edition
Windows® XP
If you try and install SP2 on 1 of these machines either by ITMU or manually, then try SP3 via ITMU/Manually is that successful?

While your upgrading to SMS 2003 SP3 suggest you install these hotfixes
KB941214 is simply to resolve some issues from the SP3 upgrade, ie. A new client.msi, add/remove programs performance issues for starters.
KB953027 is to add the XP SP3 platform to the environments tab for the program, so if you wanted to just deploy general sms adverts to XP SP3 machines, you can do, also adds other platforms Vista SP1 etc.

Yes, if I upgrade to SP2 using ITMU and then to SP3 using ITMU, its successful. I tried scanning SP1 machines with automatic updates site. that too says SP2 is applicable and not SP3.

I have successfully upgraded machines via ITMU from XP SP1 to XP SP2, but not SP3, unfortunatly our various businessess we support dont see any justification in upgrading :(

Have a thought, are you using the latest WUA version? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946928

Did you apply the KB941214, also there was another hotfix which allowed files over the size of 500mb to be distrubuted via soft dist, I have the KB at work, but not at home, ill search for it and let you know if I find it.

If the above still fails, can you post the scanwrapper, patchinstall and smswushandler (think its called this) log files, maybe it might shed some light.

Hey thanks a lot, this update is applied on the server and then SP3 is about 317mb in size. I checked for catalog, its latest.

Its actually the scanning logic for updates. If you have 2 machines, one with SP1 and another with SP2, do a scanwrapper scan or an automatic scan on both. The resultant will say SP2 applicable on SP1 and SP3 applicable on SP3, when it should say SP3 applicable for both.

I'll dig out scanwrapper for both types and post it, have a look

take a look. scanwrapper for SP2 client simply says SP3 as applicable. for SP1 client, in the beginning it says SP2 is applicable. later I installed SP3 manually and you see scanwrapper scan is removing instances of SP2 applicable from WMI.

whereas in both we can see another latest update, windows malicious software removal - September 2008 is applicable, even though previous ones are not installed.

Nothing shouts out as to why its happening, by any chance did you deploy the SP blocker in your estate ?

hmm, another thought, if you create a seperate package just to install SP3 and try this on a machine, what happens?
Can you attach the following logs and any that roll over during the scan and install.
  • scanwrapper.log
  • smswushander.log
  • patchinstall.log

Unfortunatly I dont have a lab to do this, so cant try and replicate it.

i tried all options, it seems the updates scan logic has this inbuilt, that it ll report SP2 as required if sees an SP1 and would report SP3 as required if sees an SP2.

created a new pkg to update XP SP1 clients to SP3, ITMU didnt work in this case.

I had a similar issue with XP 64bit upgrading from SP1 to SP2, ended up doing manually, just checked at work and we actually upgraded from SP1 to SP2 by creating a new package and not ITMU.

Glad you got it working in the end.
