Hello all,

I'm sure some of you run into this from time to time when generating reports from SMS queries, and I wonder if anybody has found a trick for it.

I have two spreadsheets.  One was generated from another asset management database and lists workstations by asset tag.  The other was generated from an SMS query and it lists computer names (our computer names contain a prefix followed by the asset tag).

What I need to do is compare the two spreadsheets.  For each asset tag listed in the first spreadsheet, I need to find the corresponding computer name in the second spreadsheet.

In other words, say the first spreadsheet has a column with 3 asset tags - XXX, XXY, and XXZ.  I need to combine the two spreadsheets and match those asset tags up with the computer names in the SMS spreadsheet column that would be HQXXX, HQXXY, and HQXXZ.  What I'm trying to do is eliminate computer names for which there is no corresponding asset tag.

Anybody know any tricks to help me acheive that goal?

Thanks!!!

Well, you can do that with VLOOKUP...but instead of parsing exports of reports to come up with data that should really be another report, something mo-betta would be to just create a web report of your own using the data from that asset management database.

(and just for clarification, by VLOOKUP I mean the Excel formula VLOOKUP, not some separate program or anything)  Hit F1 from Excel and look at the help for VLOOKUP to get the parameters.
