anyone happen to know when using imagex and image-indexes -- when applying an index, does it 'transfer' the entire .wim or just the index requested?

I want to store multiple images inside of one wim but i do not obviously want extra bandwidth associated with this. Just wondering, can't find anything specific on it online, pending any tests, i figured i'd see if anyone knew first.

No, the entire WIM will not be transferred. (I assume you're just going to be applying a WIM that's on a file server.) If you apply image #2, then ImageX will only read the data for the files included in image #2. Also, each file is compressed individually into chunks, so even compressed files would be transferred one-by-one.

You can also use "imagex /EXPORT" to make a WIM that contains only image #2, if you wanted to transfer a complete, intact WIM of the image.

The only exception would be for multicast: in that case, the entire WIM file is transferred to the local disk and then the requested image is extracted from the file. It does not multicast only the needed blocks containing the files from the image. (If you are talking about multicast of images stored in WDS, it's slightly different too: all images in the image group are contained in the same file, so that entire file is transferred. To keep the multicast size to a minimum, you can put each image in a separate image group.)

If you are talking about ConfigMgr 2007, you also need to be concerned with "download and execute" or "download on demand" versus "run from DP": If you choose either "download" option, the entire WIM is downloaded to the disk before the content is extracted.
