Just upgraded our site to SMS 2003 SP3 a couple weeks ago and would like to start updating our clients to the new version.
Is there a way I can control the amount of machines to push the new client to?  I have an advertisement for ccmsetup and it works great on target collections but I really don't want to update all clients at the same time so I can reduce the amount network traffic, also it would be safer if there happen to be some issues.

Tried looking and didn't see anything that would let me push a package out to say, 100 machines at a time.

Any thoughts on how / if I could achieve this?

Thanks!

The Trickle Feed script might be a good solution for you.

What is the total number of clients you need to upgrade?  If it were only 1000, then I'd say brute force direct membership may be easiest.  Otherwise, if it were 10000, then the above script could be usefull.

Also, what is the concern with upgrading your clients all at once?  Change control?  Bandwidth?

Make sure you also have the latest version of the client installed, have you also installed KB941214 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941214 , ups the client version to 2.50.42353.3108

Dependant on the number of machines to update, you could create a number of collections,
  • AD site,
  • last letter/number of the machine
  • last digit of the machines sms guid
  • Use the trickle Script above

Thanks for the suggestions, since I only have around 1000 machines to upgrade I'm not going to bother with the trickle feed script (but will bookmark it for possible use down the road!), I was really just wanting to avoid having every machine in our domain attempt to download the client at the same time to preserve bandwidth and server resources.  Our company is really busy around the end / beginning of the month and especially when there are catastrophe's (in this case Hurricane Gustav) so I need to be careful with the rollout.  I'll try to break up some collections using methods suggested and  possibly some others, thanks again for everyone's help!
