Issues with Vista SCCM OSD on Dell E6410 Wednesday, May 26, 2010 10:20 AM (permalink)

There is an active thread on people having trouble with using SCCM OSD with XP and the Dell E6410.  I had a lot of trouble with the E6410 too with Vista, but with different drivers than the thread here and on the Dell Tech Center list.  Below is a quick write up of what I experienced and how I resolved it to help anyone with the E6410 and Vista.
Issue: After importing the Dell driver CAB files the E6410 Vista build would fail after the OS was loaded and it ran through its mini setup with the error “Windows could not configure one or more system components”.  Rebooting the OS would bring this error message “To install Windows restart the computer and restart the installation”.  This also caused the same issue on our E6400’s through the auto apply drivers task.
Steps Taken: I tried updating the BIOS, removing the Intel(R) Active Management Technology – SOL, and even the ST Accelerator as suggested on the two XP threads without success.
Resolution: The Dell Touchpad Driver in the CAB file was the root cause of my issue on Vista.  Removing it from the Driver package fixed both the E6410 and the E6400 Vista builds.  Updating the driver manually post install would run fine.
I also encountered a few issues with the E6410 picking up Dell Touchpad drivers from the E6400 in the Auto Apply Driver Task and removing the Auto Apply Driver task resolved that (keep an eye on the touchpad drivers between the two models).

Hope this helps.
David

YOU ARE THE MAN! I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THIS LAPTOP FOR A WEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!! I STARTED GOING DRIVER BY DRIVER UNTIL I READ THIS POST!

I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS MUCH TROUBLE WITH ONE ONE OF THESE!

    I OWE YOU TEN BEERS!

EDIT:Okay sorry for the caps. But really. I followed your same scenario. I was trying to install Windows Vista 32 Bit Enterprise. It ended up being the touchpad driver. I simply removed it from the package and the error no longer appeared. When the system booted I had no touchpad and the keyboard was slow to respond. I used the keyboard to make my way to the driver where I had the driver and updated it in control panel. Afterwards the pad works fine. Think i'm going to have to make a image of this especially for these machines and not generalize it.  It's just too difficult to adjust for one weird laptop.
