Had a problem for a few weeks.

Clients have been vanishing from my site, although, an investigation on the client shows no problems.

Found the following in the dataldr.log (repeatedly);
Processing file xa5autzi.MIF
Renamed file to process from X:\SMS\inboxes\auth\dataldr.box\process\xa5autzi.MIF to X:\SMS\inboxes\auth\dataldr.box\process\Xxa5autzi.MIF
Processing Inventory for Machine: CLIENT   Generated: 09/28/2007 07:00:38
File successfully parsed.  Processing item CLIENT (GUID = GUID:C208C7E8-EEEA-4E85-8AF5-53807DDC7924)
CDiscoverySource::VerifyClientPublicKeys - Public key does not exist for client GUID:C208C7E8-EEEA-4E85-8AF5-53807DDC7924.
CMachineSource::InsertMachine - could not validate machine
Cannot process MIF Xxa5autzi.MIF, moving it to X:\SMS\inboxes\auth\dataldr.box\ORPHANS\m8771oy5.MIF
STATMSG: ID=2702 SEV=W LEV=M SOURCE="SMS Server" COMP="SMS_INVENTORY_DATA_LOADER" SYS=SITESERVER SITE=ABC PID=7524 TID=7740 GMTDATE=Tue Oct 02 07:52:32.717 2007 ISTR0="Xxa5autzi.MIF" ISTR1="X:\SMS\inboxes\auth\dataldr.box\ORPHANS\m8771oy5.MIF" ISTR2="" ISTR3="" ISTR4="" ISTR5="" ISTR6="" ISTR7="" ISTR8="" ISTR9="" NUMATTRS=0
Finished processing file Xxa5autzi.MIF

I also have a load of bad and orphaned MIF's as a result.

I can't see any reason for these errors, and a search on the internet indicated a possible cause being a corrupt record in the database, but haven't been able to find anything like that.

Anyone else seen this? or know of a possible fix?

Thanks in advance.

We are having the same problem.  I did notice as well that clients that showed as clients in the database now show as not being clients although the SMS client is installed on the workstations.  I am working on identifying the cause but much like you haven't found any solution to the problem.  This is also occurring on some of the new SMS AC installation. Will let you know if I come accross a solution.

Yes, we do have heartbeat discovery enabled.  We use the default setting of 7 days.

There are several site architecture questions that are worth knowing to help identify the issue.  What service pack do you currently have installed for SMS?  What is the OS/SP of the clients?  Do the clients have the correct version installed?  What is your deleted inactive client discovery data set at?

Check that sunets are correct in AD sites and services and your boundries in SMS are set correctly.
Make sure there arent and problems with the clients in DNS (multiple or stale entries).
Check the following task in SMS console:
Delete Inactive client data (should be higher then your heartbeat)
Delete Obsolete client discovery data

Good luck!

All subnets are there in AD sites and services and the Site Boundries are correct.
Delete inactive client data and obsolete client discovery are set.

The client column in the admin console shows "No".
Under the client porperties it shows client "<null>".

I found a MS article realting to updated inventory data not appearing, which is also a problem I have with some clients that do show as isntalled in the admin console, however this has not helped.  (Article ID: 899715)

Try the following in some corrupt client:

1.    Run ccmclean (client)
2.    Run ccmdelcert (client)
3.    Delete system32\ VPCache Folder.
4.    Run a discovery from Active Directory System Discovery (server)
5.    Refresh All system collection (or collection where the clients are)
6.    Run client installation from server.

Let me know how it goes and good luck

You need to find the root issue which seems to be the clients not installing correctly. Once you resolve that the bad DDRs should go away. Try and do a site autodiscover from the System Management applet in control panel on the troubled client. Also check that some of your components are enabled and not just installed on the components tab. If auto discovery fails then review the client logs and discover why. If auto discovery succeeds then follow acuesta's instructions. I have found, that for some reason unknown to me, the DB simply does not report client status correctly sometimes although the client is working fine. Many times just deleting the client from the DB in the console and letting it rediscover will resolve the issue.
