One of my management point servers is currently not functioning properly.  This server had been working until recently. The server currently fails the MP Troubleshooter MPLIST test with the error: The remote server returned an error (500) Internal Server Error.

The mplist website test also comes back with the same error versus the blank page for a properly functioning MP.  The error in the mpcontrol.log is as follows:

Http verification .sms_aut (port 80) failed with status code 500, Internal Server Error SMS_MP_CONTROL_MANAGER 6/2/2008 6:02:11 PM 2412 (0x096C)

I am not sure if it is related, but I also get the following errors in the System log in Event Viewer.  I get this error on alot of different referenced computers.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: DCOM
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10009
Date:  6/2/2008
Time:  2:36:48 AM
User:  N/A
Computer: XXXX
Description:
DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer XXXX-VTIKOO using any of the configured protocols.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

So far I have uninstalled the MP - uninstalled IIS - deleted inetpub directory - rebooted - installed IIS - rebooted - reinstalled MP.  I still get the same results.

I did find another DCOM error for IWAM account permissions but I have since corrected that issue and no longer receive that error.

Any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated.  I'm not sure where to check next.

I think the error 500's usually come from the MP not being able to talk to SQL.  Is SQL remote?  The DCOM error above is unrelated.

Thanks for your reply Brian.  Yes the SQL server is remote on the Central Primary Server.

Additional information.  The reinstall of the MP, no errors are listed in the mpsetup.log.  From your suggestion Brian, I did find that my secondary server didn't have named pipes and TCP/IP as enabled protocols in the SQL Server Client Network Utility.  I added in named pipes and TCP/IP with named pipes being first and added the Alias for our Primary SMS server and then rebooted.  However, I get the same error as before.  MPLIST test fails with the 500 error still.

Oh I hate those anonymous logons.  I always forget the fix.  Kerberos should be working instead.  Kerberos needs the time service to be syncing correctly.  So look for event log errors there.  Then check local policy settings and compare to a good machine.  Could be something there blocking Kerberos.

I don't see any errors for time syncing and don't see any issues with time syncing.  The only Kerberos error I get is the following:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Kerberos
Event Category: None
Event ID: 4
Date:  6/2/2008
Time:  11:29:37 PM
User:  N/A
Computer: XXXX
Description:
The kerberos client received a KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED error from the server host/xxxx.xxx.xxx.com.  The target name used was cifs/xxx-SESRV001.xxxx.xxxx.com. This indicates that the password used to encrypt the kerberos service ticket is different than that on the target server. Commonly, this is due to identically named  machine accounts in the target realm (XXXX.XXXX.COM), and the client realm.   Please contact your system administrator.

Compare local policy to a working MP if you can.  And look for a new GPO applied.  Here's an interesting thread: http://www.myitforum.com/forums/m_54529/mpage_1/key_anonymous%252Ckerberos/tm.htm#55109

Finally got this issue fixed.  Reinstalled MDAC on the secondary server and all is well.  What a long few days!  Thanks for your help Brian.

Hello sjones925,
I have similar 500 error but with different MPDB error EXECUTE permission denied on object 'MP_GetListOfMPsInSite'.

Do you use SQL Server 2005 for your SMS 2003? Which MDAC version do you use?

Thanks.
