We are migrating from Altiris to SCCM. I have never used SMS before now. I captured an image for each machine in our environment just to test SCCM and not allow HAL's or driver issues congest the possible troubleshooting process. When I captured the image from each of the six types of PC's that we have there was a network card driver installed. Now after the image is applied none of the computers have a NIC driver installed.

Not only should that driver be part of the image itself but I have also created a driver package containing all of our NIC drivers so I am a bit confused as to why this driver is not being installed (or being stripped out).

I noticed this same behavior when a computer that I captured an image from ran through mini-setup. I have a feeling that I might not be understanding something about how Sysprep is used in conjuction with SCCM.

Previously we had a custom sysprep answer file. It really didn't do much, just put in the key and join the PC to the proper domain to allow for a lighter touch setup process.

Now with SCCM I was made to beleive that SCCM creates the answer file on the fly and that all I needed to copy to the root of C:\ was a stock Sysprep folder with no customizations done. So I never ran through setupmgr.exe to generate an inf file.

Obviously I am misunderstanding something here about creating an image with SCCM, Sysprep and specifically driver installation via SCCM. I would appreciate it if someone could tell me what I am doing wrong.

From what I've seen the drivers are apparently stripped out of the Image before being captured (happened to me also).  But I was able to resolve it just by grabbing the latest NIC Drivers and adding them into the driver system and to the driver package.  Make sure your drivers package is distributed out to all of your DP's, they're all enabled, and there is a task in the task sequence to install drivers.  Also the install driver task should be set to "Consider drivers from all categories".

I highly recommend downloading and using the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2008:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=3bd8561f-77ac-4400-a0c1-fe871c461a89&displaylang=en&Hash=CTCYTF303UPtbk9SBExUBjRNj77a8Ad5daL5yRQLODtoT9UD%2fEpmwynSFaQ5Ff6Y2mKgOP2uQxXfF6qZT2BYgg%3d%3d#filelist

This will simplify most of the basics for creating/capturing and deploying an image.  I personally will never leave home without it.  ;)

ScotGill:
The driver packages have an "Installed" state under package status and I can browse to our DP in the SMSPKGD$ directory and locate them so I know that they are being copied to the DP's. The status is set to "Enabled" under the general tab for every driver and by default the wizard for the OSD task sequence added the "Apply Device Drivers". In that task I have it set to "Install all compatible drivers", "consider drivers from all categories" (every driver in each package has a category of some sorts assigned to it) and also "Do unattended installation of unsigned drivers on versions of Windows where this is allowed" is checked.

wbracken:
I actually have a previous topic started about that (http://www.myitforum.com/forums/MDT/m_182196/tm.htm). I now then am still confused as to how MDT complements SCCM. I set up MDT and went through some basic configuration and when I got to the OSD stuff it really felt exactly like the OSD section in SCCM so I stopped right there. I will go back and revisit the MDT. Regardless though it seems as if SCCM is not applying driver correctly. I am going to check DriverCatalog.log and MP_DriverManager.log to see what is going on there.

I am now going to try to add the "Apply Driver Package" task and point it to the NIC package that I made which contains network card drivers for all of the machines. I am leaving the "Apply Device Drivers" task in there as well because I figure it can't hurt.

Update:

So I think I am getting closer here. After adding the "Apply Driver Package" task to the sequence I was not able to start the image process from boot media. I opened up the log files on the client via the console in the PE environment and found this:

"Failed to find CCM_SoftwareDistribution object for AdvertID="P0120027" PackageID="P0100044"

P0100044 is the NIC drive package. It is in an "Installed" state on the DP and I can browse to the share and view the files from my PC. It looks like the permissions on the folder are the same as with other folders on that share. So I am close, but still stuck.

Try updating the DP with a new package source version (basically to just increment the value to v2 or whatever the next verison would be)

I did that and now the task sequence kicked off correctly. Why would that be?

Not sure really.  I see it happen a lot in my lab.  Seems that v1 of many packages fail with a "cannot find source" type of error.  As soon as I refresh the DP it works fine.  I will eventually bring this up with Microsoft I just havent really had a chance to yet.  :)

Hah! That is funny. I will soon find out if that fixes my network card installation issue.
