I have a situation where I need to have the latest cuumulative update for IE 7 (MS08-024 aka KB947864) in QFE mode rather than GDR mode.  Is there a way to deploy this patch using ITMU and have it deploy in QFE mode or do I have to treat it as an out of band patch.

I really really need to install a version of URLMON.dll on a windows SP SP3 system whos version is > 7.0.6000.20544.  Update MS08-024 fits the bill, but only if it is installed in QFE mode.

There is soemthing about calling the installer with /B:RTMQFE switch.  But now ITMU is getting its switches from the security cab, I'm not sure how this would work.  Can I override the switches specified in the CAB?

Have you tried to deploy that patch that the ITMU pulls down as part of the package?  Does it apply the GDR or the QFE version?  You may not need to do anything.

Hope this helps.

When ITMU installs the MS08-024 cumulative IE7 update on a Winxpsp3 machine, it installs the GDR branch and the system has the problem described in kb929798. "Windows Internet Explorer 7 may not correctly recognize the zone to which a network resource belongs when you access the resource by using a mapped drive in Windows Vista or in Windows XP with Service Pack 2"

None of the patches that fix the problem (929798, 941000, the march or april IE cumulatives) are available for XSPSP3. I tried to install the cumulative in QFE mode and it would not install correctly on SP3. Error was something about a missing Update.inf file. I opened a PSS call at Microsoft and I am hoping that someone there will have something 4 me on Monday.

Here is some information about this.

If you install any QFE (quick fix engineering) patch for IE, then when you install cumulative updates for IE, the cumulative update will deploy using the QFE branch. If you have not deployed any QFE patches for IE previously, then when you deploy a cumulative update for IE, it applies as the GDR branch.

You can also force the QFE branch to install using a command line switch. I forget the switch, it is something like /sp2qfe or something similar. I don't know if you can specify the QFE mode when using WSUS or ITMU.

If you have already installed a cumulative IE 7 update, then if you try to apply the same update using the /qfe switch you will get an incorrect OS version error. You have to uninstall the cumulative update first before you cam apply the update in QFE mode.

So my problem was that I was installing IE 7 update to SP3 via ITMU, then I was trying to apply the cumulative update with the QFE switch. I got an incorrect OS version, making me think it was because SP3 wasn't supported by the cumulative update. This is reasonable since the error message says incorrect OS version.
