Hello all, I am in the process of a Build and capture.  Everything works ok, except right at the end.  The action that's running is the "Prepare OS", the task is "running sysprep".  A window pops up telling me I have an unspecified error "0x00004005".  I found an article from Johan Arwidmark where he listed 3 'possibles' for this error... I guess I still don't understand this all, still new to the OSD piece.  Has anyone seen this type of issue, or can anyone help me understand where to look for more detailed error logs, I can't find anything in the SMSTS.log

Did you find resolution to this?  I am myself having this error.  Also, do you still know where to find Johan's article?

Do you have all of the following files in your Sysprep folder?

factory.exe
setupcl.exe
sysprep.exe
sysprep.inf

Sorry, I neglected to let everyone know that I am trying to build and capture Vista, so sysprep comes with the OS.  I have not modified the contents of the sysprep folder.  Still no solution...Nickmo

This article has content for error 80004005, as opposed to 0x00004005.  Did you post the wrong link or misread the leading 8 for a 0?

So for Vista, make sure you don't have a C:\Sysprep folder. And I think you may need to make sure the machine has been activated before capturing it (I seem to remember running into oddities otherwise). Just my random thoughts...

Thanks for the thoughts.  I'm not sure how to activate the machine durring my build and capture sequence.  Can this be done?

OK, I think I have the problem and solution nailed down for you.  The problem is that Prepare OS phase is unable to set the Administrator password to be blank (thus halting the process) because no .NET Frameworks were installed as part of the core image build.  To fix my 0x00004005 error, I installed 1.1 SP1, 2.0 SP1, and 3.0 SP1.  At this point I'm out of energy to officially determine which component is necessary, but I highly suspect the 2.0 framework was a requirement.  Try it to see if it solves the problem.

I wonder if there is a way for MS to add this into their documentation?  Or maybe it is there but I completely overlooked it!!
