Couple of questions

1. When you create your capture media. Is there away you can set a path & username so you dont have to manually enter it during the caputure process?

2. When you are deploying an image how do you pick out machines that are new & wont be in SCCM?

1. Are you using the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit in conjunction with SCCM? Or just SCCM on it's own?

2. I'm not sure I understand this question. How are you looking to deploy your SCCM-based image to your machines? Either they'll have to be existing SCCM clients, be booted from a CD (or something), or PXE booted in order for bare metal machines or existing OSes to be imaged again. In the MS docs there are a few different scenarios that do a good job of helping to see how things can be done...

Ive created a wim with capture media. now I want to preferably deploy this test image to a baremetal machine via SCCM?

As Rick points out, you can install that image from a DVD or using PXE deployment.  Are you familiar with PXE imaging?  Basically, your machine boots up and connects to the SCCM\PXE server, downloads the image, installs the O\S, and then installs whatever other software you specify.  This installation sequence is called a "Task Sequence" and it is advertised to a collection in SCCM.

So, you create a collection (e.g. PXE) and assign existing computers or new bare metal machines (using their MAC address) to this collection.  There is a Task Sequence advertised to this collection.  When the client PXE-boots (i.e. F12 curing boot) it checks DHCP for a PXE server.  It contacts the server and SCCM responds with the advertisement\task sequence to run.  It then proceeds with the install.

Hi rob,
Yes im familiar with PXE. Ive been using RIS for a fair few years now for installing Xp on my machines. We currently use driveimage for imaging machines but I want to move from this to imaging in sccm.
Ive created task Seq media for puliing down an image but I cant figure out how to image  bare bone machine without the use of media/ via pxe booting. I presume this can be done?

Im currently using RIS still so this apears when account is prestaged in AD when PXE booting. not sure how I PXE boot to the sccm though or from SCCM to machine.

This is a can of worms.  Search for posts by RJARRETT and you will find a slew of PXE related posts and problems.  Here it goes the Reader's Digest version...

ESTABLISH A PXE SERVER USING SCCM
  1. Install Windows Server O\S with current Service Packs.
  2. Install Windows Deployment Services from Add\Remove and DO NOT configure the service.
  3. Install SCCM 2007 and validate normal function.
  4. Assign the PXE Service to the central site.
  5. Check PXESetup.log for installation successful indication and no errors.
  6. Check PXEMSI.log for any errors.
  7. Deploy the x86 and x64 boot images to the SMSPXEIMAGES$ distribution point.
  8. Verify the boot images are on both the “normal” and SMSPXEIMAGES$ server shares.
  9. Verify the status message confirm successful boot image distribution.

ESTABLISH AN OS IMAGE FILE

  • Create an O\S image file (background http://www.myitforum.com/forums/m_174880/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#175083).
  • Deploy the O\S image file to "normal" distribution points (i.e. not the SMSPXEIMAGE$ DP created with the role).
  • Verify the reference image file is deployed to ..\RemoteInstall\SMSBoot\x86 and x64.
    ESTABLISH A PXE COLLECTION

  • Create a PXE collection that will hold your direct assignment machine records.
  • Add the list of machine names and MAC addresses to the PXE collection using the Computer Association wizard.
  • Refresh the PXE collection and ensure your bare metal machines were added to the collection.
    CREATE AN OSD TASK SEQUENCE

  • Create a Task Sequence using the appropriate boot image and your OSD reference image.
  • Advertise the Task Sequence to the PXE collection.
  • Boot a bare metal machine via PXE (F12 during BIOS boot)
You should see a "bootstrap" WinPE environment launch.  It will download the O\S image and reboot into the imaging process.  Sometimes the bootstrap or the rebooted machine fails.  Check out the following:

    Network Access Account Not Set
Resolution:  Go into the Client Policy in SCCM and set a Network Access Account.  It sometimes "disappears" even after everything has been working fine.
    http://www.myitforum.com/forums/m_177370/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#177370

    PXE CERT Not Set
Resolution:  Check the PXE Certificate in the SCCM console.  Verify that the Root CA is trusted.  Alternatively, reset the expiration date.  Sometimes the PXE process stops liking the certificate.
    http://www.myitforum.com/forums/m_177312/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#177312

    GetHostByName Failed
Resolution:  Ensure the FQDN is properly set.

    rjarrett,
that is exactly what im looking for. a nice to the point step by step guide. unfortunatley microsft documentation is never this helpful & quite often sends you down the wrong path.

Ill follow that through & let you know how I get on.

one other question regarding Standalone boot media for imaging. i used this to image A PC but it didnt join the domain after the build. my sysprep normally prompts for computer name & connect to domain windows. i didnt get any of these apear. where did it grab the name for the PC from(does it use its previous name from sccm) & does it use the SCCm network account to add machines to the domain.? if so this would explain why it never went on as that account has no permissions in AD to add accounts.

I have only done limited CD deployments of a capture image.  It escapes me at the moment.

In PXE deployment, one of the Task Sequence steps includes a place to join the computer to the domain.

P.S.  The Network Access Account needs to be set for some features in PXE to work.  I cannot recall exactly what fails, but you can go into Site Settings | Accounts and confirm that an NAA account is specified.  If not, you will have trouble.  See my previous post on the NAA issue.

P.S.S.  When you create the Standalone Media, you have to specify a Task Sequence.  Does that TS include your credentials, mentioned previously?
