Hi

I am having a problem with some of my XP & Vista machines, when the user connects to the Server via RDP their local printer is missing or not available, now I have made sure that the printer option is ticked in the RDP options, added the reg entry for all the port redirects & have installed the printer drivers on the server but the printer is still not available on the server.

Is there something else I could try ?

Thanks

Leon

One thing you could check is the version of Remote Desktop you're using.  To my knowledge, there are two versions available for XP: v5 and v6.  If you are running version 5 on XP, you may want to consider trying v6...

Version 6:

Are they USB multi-function printers?  Those are notorious for not mapping correctly over a terminal session.

Here is a fair resource:
http://www.sessioncomputing.com/printing.htm

In the past (before 2003) I worked for a company that would kludge it together.  You would basically create a local copy of the printer on the client machine, make that the default, and share that printer over the session.  There was more to it, but those were the basics.

There is a product called ScrewDrivers which allows you easily setup your local printer for use in Remote Desktop. I find it works best if you install the printer first and then install ScrewDrivers. It's not free but might be worth the cost to reduce the headache.

there are generaly errors in the event log when printer mapping fails.  if you want way more info than you ever needed check out citrix sites.  same issues mapping printers as they are just using a fancy RDP protocol (ICA).  all the same issues apply.  but genearly the first thing to try is to install the printer drivers on the primary machine that match exactly to what is on the machine you are RDPing to.
