Hi there,

Using : SMS 2003

I consult at a client site that has a number of laptops that are out in the field and no longer connected to the network - no vpn - no pki - etc. These laptops have the 2003 advanced client installed, and had initial inventories performed before they went out into the field. At this point there is no way they can reach any DP/MP.

If we were to manually remote into these machines, is there a way to run an inventory through the Control Panel applet and somehow capture the data for later re-integration to the server database? Will the inventory even run if the client cannot make a connection to the site?

Thanks in advance,
J.

Does this help? http://sourceforge.net/projects/smshwinv/

Capture SMS2003 Hardware Inventory on Systems without Network connectivity or Systems without an SMS Agent installed. This Tool creates a DDR (DataDiscoveryRecord) and an IDMIF File for each scanned system.

Nice Ricky!

JWM - sounds like a good reason to sell the client SCCM

Ricky - thank you - this looks very promising. I will try to import these output files back to an SMS server we have setup at our office to see if/how they populate.

Any ideas on the software inventory? This is primarily what we're looking for. However this is a good step forward.

The sms_def.mof is for SP2, so if you have SP3 or some custom modifications you made in your enviroment, dont forget to use the one in your enviroment.

Im not sure how you could acheive SINV offline, may be worth asking Roger Zander if he could adapt the exe for the tool to do sinv, maybe someone else with more SMS knowledge can assist here with a method.

Thanks once again Ricky. I have mailed Roger to see if he may have devd a sinv version of this. Looking over the hardware inventory component in 2003, it does query ARP for software - if his code is written to run the same inventory this may cover it.

Any other suggestions welcome : )
