We current manage our servers and workstations via SCCM. Patch management is working well for our managed clients. My attention is now on patch management for servers in our DMZ. They are not currently managed. Do servers in the DMZ need to be SCCM clients for patch management? Or could they be directly managed by the WSUS server itself? Any ideas?

Here is a question for you, why wouldn't you want them to be ConfigMgr Clients?

Long term, I hope they becomme managed by SCCM. Short term I was just wondering If non SCCM clients could utilize SCCM\WSUS.

So are your PCs within the DMZ within the same domain, trusted domain or stand alone? Keep in mind that you will have problems if you try to use the ConfigMgr’s WSUS server because you will have to different setting. I recommend following the KISS principal and just making these clients ConfigMgr clients, in the longer term it will be simpler.
