Being new to the SCCM world, I've been trying to become accustomed to the admin console.  Can someone help me understand the difference between Application and packages under the software library.  Also is there an easy document for doing Security Updates.  Thanks in advance.

Not kidding when I say this, but the TechNet docs are really outstanding with CM12.
Check out Application Management here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg699359.aspx#WhatsNew_Software
As for software updates, I think there were a couple sessions at MMS.  All sessions are public here: http://www.mms-2012.com/digitalmms
