SCCM 2007 and/or WSUS? - 7/18/2008 11:05:34 AM

We have recently installed a SCCM 2007 server for desktop remote control.  My question is does SCCM 2007 need WSUS for applying updates?  Is there any benefit keeping the WSUS server other than what is listed on the differences chart?

Thanks!

You do need WSUS to apply updates.  I don't know really what you meant in the second question.

We are running WSUS 3.1 to apply updates and SCCM 2007 for remote control.  I thought we could remove WSUS and just use SCCM for both.  I am having issues configuring the different types of updates (critical...) in SCCM, (looks like you must configure it in WSUS).  Since I am not fimilar with either application getting rid of one would make the learning curve easier.  Cheers!

SCCM uses WSUS for updates, but all of the administration is done from the admin console, not the WSUS administration console.  WSUS is just there as the scanning mechanism to determine what patches are required for the system.  SCCM then advertises the updates to the clients as a patch package.

You never actually go into WSUS and approve updates.

When configurnig the SCCM server do you select updating from MS or a down stream server?  I previously select downstream server.

Select from Microsoft.  Also, just to clarify, ConfigMgr uses WSUS to download the update catalog only.  It does not actually distribute updates via WSUS.

I have the SCCM install on one server at the moment but the WSUS is not enable on it.  I'm using another WSUS to distribute the updates through AD.  The way Jason said that the SCCM wont distributes updates.  Should I just keep my WSUS run separately from the SCCM?  and What is the point of having WSUS in SCCM?

sorry, I'm so new to SCCM.

Some of the benefits to integrating WSUS into CM would be –
  • CM Reporting capabilities
  • CM Maintenance Windows
  • CM Distribution points (and Branch Distribution points)
  • Integration with OSD
I’m sure there are many more but those are some of the first to come to mind.
