I’m having an issue getting the console on my Vista box to connect to my SCCM server.  If I turn off the firewall on the server, I can get in fine.  I added in Ports 135 TCP/UDP, but it still hangs up.  I watched the firewall log, and it comes up with some random port.  If I exclude that port, I can connect fine.  But if I reboot the server, then I need to figure out what port it is using again.  I am guessing that RPC is negotiating some arbitrary port to use.  Is there some other service/program I need to exclude on the server?

Does the console work just fine on XP?
Are you just using the basic console (no right-click tools)?

And does this help: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb632618.aspx?

It is happening on two seperate SCCM consoles on Vista.  No add in tools.  On my XP VM, which is running on VPC2007 on my Vista box, the same thing happens.

If you suspect the RPC ports see this article. It allows you to lock in specific ports for RPC to use. Then you can open those on the firewall.

Thanks, I will try this out!  Isn't anyone else using a Vista client with the console, and talking to a Server2003 machine running the windows firewall?  I just don't get why i seem to be the only one having this issue.

I am running the vista client with the SCCM console but I have internal firewall settings controlled with Group Policy. I am not seeing any issues.
