I recently called Microsoft regarding this issue.  If you try to do it from the console without running the prerequisite checker on the parent site first you won't be able to upgrade the secondary sites without running it manually on all the secondaries. What you do is this. On the primary parent goto the SP1 source and run splash.hta off the root of SP1.The splash screen pops up.Choose the 2nd option from the top "Run the prerequisite checker"Make sure the "Upgrade" radial button is selected.Check the "All Secondary Sites" box.Click OK.After the checks pass click OK. Then open up the SCCM console and do the usual right click upgrade secondaries.

I manually run the SP1 on each box. only had two secondary's so it wasnt a big deal.

Anyomne else looking at upgrading make sure you clear any warnings in prereq checker before proceeding.
