Hi all,
I would like to clean up my SMS database/data in order to have the exact numer/name of workstation I actually have in Active Directory. What if I delete all workstation and starting a new discovery? Considering that on my workstations there is the SMS Advanced Client (only XP and Vista PC) already installed, will it be reinstalled?
What the best practice to have a clean "situation" reflecting my actual AD infrastructure?
Thanks in advance.
Bye,

-
Andrea

I've never seen anyone with a clean AD for it to matter.  You sure you have no stale\dead machines in AD?  I wouldn't delete your clients because even though heartbeat discovery will make them show up again, they'll all be asked to send full hardware again.  Noisy.  What's starting this question?  Are your numbers way off?

Hi,
Let me better explain what I really want :-) I'm new in this farm and in IMHO previuos IT manager did some mistakes configuring SMS (maybe I'm wrong).
I would like to have my SMS database updated with my AD. No matter if I have stale\dead machines in my AD.
In AD I have 3 OU where I have all of my workstations that I want to have in my SMS DB too:

HQCentral;
SecondaryHQ1;
SecondaryHQ2;

Actually I have 3 discovery methods active in my SMS environment:
1-Hearbeat, Every 1 day; Hearbeat only queries the SMS DB, right?
2-Active Directory System Discovery (Recursive, No Group included), Every 1 day at 12:30 only for HQCentral;
3-Active Directory System Group Discovery (Recursive, No Group included), Every 2 hours 00:00 on 3 OU;

The first thing I want to do is to disable the 3rd Discovery method, Active Directory System Group Discovery (since I already discover these workstations with the 2nd DM) but I have to add the other 2 OU to the 2nd Discovery method, right?

What do you think? Would this cfg works or I misunderstood the way discovery method work?
Thanks,

-
Andrea

To answer your questions:

Heartbeat discovery doesn't query the SMS DB, but checks on all PCs in your network. Therefore, these computers have to be turned on to be discovered by heartbeat.
Yes, you'll have to add the 2 additional OUs to discover all members.
If you don't rely on computer groups being used for software distribution or other functionality, you can disable this discovery.
Then you should have all machines discovered by SMS and are being active in your environment. By default, heartbeat is set to once per week because the active clients report data on a regular base and will be kept active.

Hi,
thank you.
So I enable only these 2 "Discovery Methods":

Heartbeat Discovery
Active Directory System Discovery

But with my configuration (1 Primary/Central Site and 2 Secondary Sites) what's the best solution:

Hearbeat Discovery: where it's better to have this DM enabled?
Active Directory System Discovery: where it's better to have this DM enabled?

Thans you,

-
Andrea

Keep Heartbeat enable at all times on all Sites!

Heartbeat is a PC based discovery not server based. This tells you that a PC is alive and therefore it should be within your AD, if it is not then your AD is out of wack.

Hi,
I already have Hearbeat Discovery enabled on all of my 3 sites.
What about Active Directory System Discovery? It's better to leave this DM enabled on Primary/Central site only with all 3 OU included or configure the primary site with only its OU, and the secondary sites with their own OU?
Thank you.

It depends... How is the SMS Client getting installed?
Why not do a discovery on your whole AD, instead fo just the three OUs?

Hi,
because I know that my clients are only in these 3 OU.
Even better, I want SMS discovery only workstation in these OU.
So what's better for my actual situation?
Bye,

Config the primary site with its OU.
