Hello all, I'm new to the site and figured I'd not only introduce myself, but also pick your brains to find out some information.

My organization is preparing to implement SMS 2003 SP3. They've sent some of our people to an SMS course, but I came on as an alternate on top of my other duties and as normal, won't be provided proper training on it and have to get myself up to speed on things. So, in my quest for knowledge- I came across this site. :)

I've purchased the MS Systems Management Server 2003 Administrator's Guide and have access to a Skillport course online that'll also help, but my question to you all is:

Are there any other online resources that you know of that can get even more indepth in topics such as creating reports, gathering inventories, as well as good SQL tutorials? I don't have any experience in SQL and through what I've learned so far have determined that I'm gonna need to learn quite a bit in order to properly do my job.

Any input that you can provide me with will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome!  To start, you've found your home.  I learned just about everything I know by lurking here & asking questions.  If you have any questions at all, just ask.

If you're looking for other books, I've reviewed most of the 2003 books.  As for other sites, faqshop.com, blogcastrepository.com have good stuff.

Thanks for the resources. I'm sure I'll be full of questions once I get a firmer grasp of what this SMS monster is going to be. Hope ya'll don't mind noob questions! :)

I've always found the Concepts and Operations guides to be a very valuable resource. I'm constantly referring back to it. -> http://technet.microsoft.com/en-au/sms/bb676794.aspx

Also, i've got this printed out and stuck onto my desk --> http://www.myitforum.com/myitwiki/getfile.aspx?file=advancedlogs.htm.

Have a read through through the various downloads for SMS on the downloads page -> http://www.myitforum.com/downloads/. You'll find a bunch of time saving tools and if you dive into the code you get a really good idea of how it all fits together.

No worries about the n00b q's. We all started somewhere. And yes SMS is a MONSTER, though more like Sulley from Monsters Inc than Frankenstien once you get to know it.

Ooo I thought of something else.  Since you were the one that didn't get training, start now dropping hints that you are the one that needs to go to MMS 2009 next year!  It's much better than any training course anyway.  Dozens of hands-on labs, and hundreds of sessions.  Check out the mms2008 site to see what you missed.

I love when these threads are started!  Even though I've been working with SMS for ~2 years, helpful things I have never seen before like the advancedlogs.htm file that ldekalb posted always show up.  Sherry is also being serious when she says to ask ANY questions you may have, everyone here is very helpful (almost TOO helpful... *shiftyeyes*)

Using the search can be a bit of a pain sometimes, so don't be offended if someone answers your questions by linking to another thread. I have at least 30 threads here in my favorites :)

Two books I have and refer to often are SMS 2003 Recipies and Distributing Software with Systems Management Server 2003.  They're great to read and reference if you are just starting out.

Whenever I work with customers that either have no training plan, budget, etc and have newly appointed SMS Admins (basically putting SMS responsibilities on existing admins) I always recommend certain books, websites, webcasts, and virtual labs.

If you aren't already aware of the webcasts that Microsoft provides they can be found at:  http://msevents.microsoft.com/CUI/AdvancedSearch.aspx?culture=en-US#advsearchloaded
I'm not sure if this link will work but this is a search for "SMS" dating back since 22 Aug 02.  There are 24 pages of SMS goodies.
http://msevents.microsoft.com/CUI/AdvancedSearch.aspx?culture=en-US#culture=en-US;advanced=true;sortKey=;sortOrder=;pageEvent=false;startDate=8/22/2002;endDate=11/20/2008;kwdAny=SMS;countryId=US;languageCode=en;eventType=0;searchcontrol=yes;s=1

Microsoft also hosts free virtual labs at: http://www.microsoft.com/events/vlabs/default.mspx
