Hi all,
I have an easy question for everyone. I am looking to hear what size team people have to support SMS in their company.

Currently I am supporting SMS 2003 SP3, WSUS 3.0 SP1, MDT 08 (company standard workstation & server images), and doing all software packaging in Wise Solutions.

The SMS site consist of 7000 clients over three domains. The SMS server structure is 1 central server, 3 primary servers, 12 secondary servers, @45 distribution points. (All over the US)

Currently I am a one man show doing everything. I was wondering what other people would recommend for staffing structure for this or how their SMS support team is structure so I can compare it to mine company.

Thanks

That seems to be my job description minus the WSUS stuff, but once we roll to SCCM 2007 I am sure the WSUS stuff will fall into my lap. I am pusshing for one of our helpdesk guys to assist every once in a while when I am sinking in work. How many applications do you support? We  have a Structural Department that has 45+ applications, and 10 of those applications gets updates every week, so I am constantly busy working on apps. One man show here as well. I would say that having 2 people would be a good starting point.

200K clients, I think there's roughly 20 people, 6 engineers that do the architecting, engineering and higher level troubleshooting, and 14 production folks that do the day-to-day package pushing, client troubleshooting and minor reports.

If we had our way, we'd add 4 more engineers so we can turn on more features and provide more services to the enterprise.  But that's a hard sell :)

My last position had an environment that was very similar to what you described, almost identical, with a 3 person team.  We also did some software packaging and we monitored our antivirus environment.  I wouldn't have wanted to do it with less people.  It's definitely doable as vacations and sick time proved, but I don't think more resources is out of the question to want.

One man here as well, supporting a public school system of 23k systems, 74k user accounts with 1 primary SMS server and 66 secondary servers (52 standard and 14 virtual).  I also spec out, build and install our servers along with managing the Blackberry server and do all of the software repackaging.  We have about 35 field techs, 3 2nd tier support people, and 5 network analysts.

There are two of us at my org that (1000 clients, 1 central, 2 primary servers) that support SCCM, however we also support Exchange, MOSS, MOM, AD, FC SANs and all of the Cisco network infrastructure.....

and I am losing my hair at a stellar rate!

And I thought we are under staffed..LOL

I'm by myself supporting 1 SMS2003 SP3, 7 WSUS 3.x, MDT2008, also Packaging, deployment, troubleshooting and designing.

The only part that is suffering is Package deployment, I have no time to do as many as it should be.

And guess what i'm now in charge of VDI deployment for Fiscal 09.

Good luck everyone...And I'm thankfull I have a Job.
